    Short answer:

    PS3 hardware is more powerful

    Ps2 has better games library.

The backward compatible PS3s are the 60gb version but it's software emulation only, meaning certain titles will work, certain titles won't, and some will work terribly. It really isn't worth getting it for that feature especially as the 60gb consoles sell for more on average than you can get a new 80gb or even 120gb version.

Actually, the uk 60GB version is HARDWARE

No, the emotion engine was only in japanese and the first run american models. they took the emotion engine hardware out for uk and all subsequent 60gb models as they decided it was too expensive to manufacture.

As much as getting an old 60Gb console for backwards compatibility is a good idea in many respects I wouldn't touch one without a warranty.

Yes the 360 has problems but you have a 3 years warranty, the PS3 is starting to have problems now and its only 1 year on the warranty.

Personally I would say spend a little more and build a mid-spec PC, will make both consoles look dated now.

seems to be varied reports on whats covered but i believe the wording is for specific ROD errors
some have had luck with faults not covered getting repaired
stuff like DVD drives etc would be 1 year
  • PS2? Why would you still want the PS2? Why? oh Why?

PS3 is much more superior! Much more! free wireless gaming. Better graphics. HD. Other stuff too.

The op already owns a ps2 so who cares about an backwards compatibility.

I own a xbox 360 premium and a ps3 (paid £160 for each one), frankly the ps3 makes a better media centre and all in one home cinema (it gan be fitted with 500gig disks) but i suspect natal will make the 360 the overall gamer gen winner.

Last i heard the next xbox will be properly backwards compatible with the 360 since it plans to use the same cpu/gpu makers but again who cares.

If you are interested in online, demos etc the 360 wins, if you want the iplayer, similar gamers and expandable media then the ps3 wins.

Thank you all again for all your comments. Stupid question of the day - is iplayer the same thing as I have on the pc to watch bbc programmes or am I getting completely mixed up?
