this is not correct the graphics are better and you are still going to see the better graphics. they just wont be in hd.0 -
as far as backward compatibilty goes. unless you live in a tiny house or a house packed with stuff why not just keep your ps2 as well.0

Thanks Donna I did think that and it isn't a problem apart from all 4 controllers are really on their last legs - actually only one is working at the moment.
I find decisions like this really hard as I try to teach the kids to be considerate consumers and not to just want the latest thing because the manufacturers tell them they need it.The birds of sadness may fly overhead but don't let them nest in your hair0 -

I think the best thing would be to get them all to write down say 10 games they want to play, and then do a little research into which console is the most suitable and cost effective and whats the best option.. One thing to remember is not every game is available on every console and sometimes xbox and ps3 fight against each other for exclusivity...
and also, if youve got broadband they might want to play online against their mates... xbox live is brilliant for this...0 -

ps2 controllers dont work on ps3 and ps3 controllers dont work on ps2. unless someone posts and says there is some sort of adaptor then what i say is the case. i guess it is still possible to buy new controllers for the ps2 if that is what you are thinking.
on your last point well i guess as you didnt rush out on the day the ps3 came out and buy one then you can feel not too bad about that.0 -
Thanks Donna - I was more thinking that if the PS2 games played on the PS3 then I wouldn't need to get new controllers for the PS2 rather than expecting them to work with the other machine. The birds of sadness may fly overhead but don't let them nest in your hair0

You'll probably have to pay a premuim to get one of the older backward compatible PS3s as they are still in high demand0

if your a big gamer, you really need a ps3 or 360.
the wii is best for your family fun and is an excellent balance of decent graphics and playability.
nothing wrong with the ps2 if you like the games you already have. the choice...is yours!Target Savings by end 2009: 20,000

Short answer:
PS3 hardware is more powerful
Ps2 has better games library.
The backward compatible PS3s are the 60gb version but it's software emulation only, meaning certain titles will work, certain titles won't, and some will work terribly. It really isn't worth getting it for that feature especially as the 60gb consoles sell for more on average than you can get a new 80gb or even 120gb version.
Also, the blu ray feature (And the fact it's a pretty good upscaling dvd player) are very good features if you ever do upgrade your tv.
The media streaming is great, as is the iplayer support. The ps3 is a good all round entertainment centre, but if it's just games, then the ps2 has so many gems i bet your kids have never heard of (okami, Gregory horror show, Shadow hearts series, Ico, Shadow of the colossus) and can play so many classic ps1 games (Alundra, Vagrant story and so many more that I'd better not begin listing them) that they would keep your kids busy until the NEXT gen comes out.
I'd better stop before this becomes a rant about people not paying enough attention to the gaming scene, but yes, stick to PS2 for now, there's enough games to last a lifetime if you have taste.0
