Anyone had a planned c-section rather than VBAC with Crohn's or bowel resection?

Hi Rosie, sorry this all sounds really tricky :( and I really relate to a fear of labour!

From what you've said and from what I've read elsewhere about risks of Vbacs, my understanding of what the consultant has said is about them trying to choose the least risky option for you.

Given what they know now, they're saying the least risk is in trying for a Vbac. The reason for performing an emergency section would be where the risk of you giving birth vaginally suddenly was overtaken by a greater risk due to an unforseen emergency, like a cord prolapse or something. Only at that point would it be less risky to go for the section. They can't recommend doing a more risky proceedure initially because it is against the nice guidelines.

Hope that makes some sense :)

If I was in that position I would be going for an elective section.
  • I think the OP needs proper advice from more than one professional so she can make the best choice for her.

Good luck for a safe, healthy delivery and a beautiful baby!
May all your dots fall silently to the ground.

I am a midwife, and the decision for elective section would be the one that I would make in these circumstances.

Everything is pointing towards an elective section. I've managed to speak to a senior obs (can't spell it!!!) that a friends knows and also will be speaking to another next week. He was amazed that they were considering a normal delivery as I'm a high risk pregnancy (scary ). The hospital have written on my notes that I might opt for VBAC so I'm hoping I can get them to agree to a section. I'm aware it may not be straight forward but complications or not I'm hoping it will give me a much more positive birth experience than last time. Thankyou for all of the advice.

Also, if you go for elective you will probably have the right people doing it i.e. consultant as it will be planned and booked in. If you labour and then end up having a section it could be in the middle of the night by less experienced staff.

A few months on and I'm expecting a baby boy bump that will be delivered by elective section on the 19th of April :T. Relieved but still scared stiff about the surgery :o

I hope your pregnancy is going well and it sounds like the correct decision has been made...one thing to remember is that things dont always go to plan so risking a natural birth as others have said was a very worrying option for you. Its no wonder you were so scared with all the complications involved.
I hope everything goes smoothly for you and your little one.

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this: Sorry, giving or asking for medical advice is not permitted on this forum as it’s not what this site is about.
