If you have too many lettuces you can use them for soup! Do you grow broad beans? If so you can cook young broad beans in the pod together with lettuce leaves (so they taste sweeter), sauteed in a bit of oil and chopped bacon (if you eat meat - we don't so we do without bacon).
Enjoy the courgettes, too - we also have quite a few now and love frying the flowers in batter!
Our courgette flowers just wilt and fall off - when do you pick the flowers? Before the courgette starts to grow?
We haven't got broad beans. The lettuce is too nice to make soup with! Really crunchy. I'm going away at the end of the week and there's about 15 lettuces there haha!! They are quite dinky though so you can easily use one to serve 2 people, or even one each for a main course salad.0 -
The flowers need to be picked up first thing in the morning when they are open, so you can remove any insects without breaking them. Pick them off the courgettes before they have time to wilt. But try not to pick too many male flowers (the ones on the long stems) because they are needed for pollen for more courgettes!
Another nice way to eat the flowers is stuffed with a piece of mozzarella cheese and a strip of anchovy, then twisted closed, dipped in batter and fried.
Even chopped together with the courgettes themselves and sauteed with onion in a bit of oil they make a beautiful dressing for pasta.
Buon appetito! Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).0 -

Sparrer - I hope you had a fab day yesterday
Here are my pleasures for yesterday:
- A quick walk to the shop before lunch. I felt refreshed and full of beans after.
- DH made me a light lunch of soft poached eggs and cod fishcakes, it was so lovely.
- We were supposed to be having roast chicken for tea, however neither of us fancied it because it was too hot and we were still full from lunch, so had sandwiches instead. Sometimes a simple meal is just what you want.
- Making time to read some of my book
- An early night as DH had to be up at 5.30am to catch the train this morning.Value of prizes 2010 - 2017: £8374 Wins 2022: Magic set

Sparrer - Glad you have had such a nice day.
You don't have to answer this question if you don't want to, but I was just wondering if you still find it hard when people give you wine etc? I get annoyed when people give me chocolates (I have a slight intolerance so don't eat them, and actually don't really like it) or smellies (I have exceptionally sensitive skin so can't use anything remotely perfumed). As I said, don't answer if I am being too nosy...
Hi Ladyhawk, I'm not at all offended by your question, just about everyone here knows and I see no point in hiding it under the carpet - I never know, someone might ask for help one day and maybe I can point them in the direction of the various agencies who give it.
I don't really find it hard because I have such good support from my family and the fellowship, and from my neighbour who's so considerate, but I'd definitely not be comfortable with it in the house. On the odd occasion I'm given a bottle it stands inside my side gate and DNeighbour takes it, then brings me a gift of similar value in the way of groceries, tea etc., in exhange.
Re chocolate I can take it or leave it, never buy it and a box of chocs will sit in my fridge for months. I might have one or two but they usually end up in the bin. As for smellies I'm very much like you, it have to be simple, uncoloured/unperfumed or I've got a rash as soon as it's opened. I take that sort of thing to the charity shop or give them for raffle prizes.
I think the best way is to let people know of any intolerance one has to any substance. I don't get offended at these things, as I said those who know don't give me wine etc, those who don't can't be blamed if they're not aware.0 -
Evening all!
Some pleasures for today:
1. OH tidied up the mess in the spare room this morning before he went to work.
2. Big boss realised how rubbish my line manager is today,so hopefully thinks will start to improve.
3. Left over roast dinner for lunch...mmmmmmmm!
4. A lovely welcome from thepup when I got home from work.
5. Scrummy tea thanks to meal 2 of rubber chicken!
6. Took the pup for a walk in this lovely rain (and yes I mean it - - I hate summer)
7.Just about to settle down with a cup of hot choc to finish my book (AS Byatt's 'The Children's Book' - BRILLIANT!) whilst OH is out.Clearing debt to save for a simple wedding.Starting 2016 With debt of £77000 -
Evening all,
Firstly thank you Sparrer for answering my nosy question. I can't imagine how hard it must be to beat an addiction and respect to anyone who does.
Funkymonkey - hope your day improved.
1) Dyed my roots this morning before work - they were really a disgrace!
2) Had a 10am meeting in London so took it easy getting into work.
3) Sat at a hot desk with my "fancy london friends" as my usual desk mates call them. Most people in my usual office don't get to escape very often so I think are a teensy bit jealous when I do. The London crowd is fun to be around and it is always nice to catch up with their news.
4) NSD! Woohoo! I am getting back into the swing of NSD's which is great. Tomorrow should also be one and I am trying o be good until Friday which is pay day.
5) Sent my brochure to the Graphics department to design properly now all the text is done. I am quite excited about this brochure as it is the first one that I have actually written. The previous ones were written by copywriters and I didn't really know what I was doing with them so they were quite hard work.
Sleep tight and don't let the bedbugs bite (or the nits or the mozzies which have left their mark on my... um... body)
LMan plans and God laughs...Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry. But by demonstrating that all people cry, laugh, eat, worry and die, it introduces the idea that if we try to understand each other, we may even become friends.0 -
Sorry no pleasures to post today as after arriving in work after a lovey weekend I found out that my friend's husband had died on Thursday. He was only 39 and had a massive heart attack. I can't even imagine how she is feeling at the moment.0

Evening all.
Tealady - I'm so sorry to hear your friend's dreadful news. My best wishes to her, and you, at this incredibly difficult time.
Ladyhawk - you and me both with those damn mozzies. Hate them, hate them, hate them.
sparrer - I meant to post this yesterday and I'm very sorry I forgot: happy birthday, and I hope you had a lovely day.
zarazara - it sounds like you had a productive day yesterday. My dad made raspberry vodka a couple of years ago and it was  - I must have a go at making some myself.
funkymonkey - hope your day's improved by now.
Acey - I hope your son's recovering from his scooter accident, and good luck with the Battle of the Nits!
My pleasures for today (five of them, I hope):
1) Painted my toenails yellow this morning - for no reason other than it seemed like a good idea at the time - and they make me smile everytime I look down.
2) My last remaining French bean plant has a flower on it. (The slugs got the rest of the plants.)
3) Found a tray of decent-ish quality sausages (85% meat ones) RTC in Tesco at lunchtime.
4) My university assignment is very nearly done - it's a long way short of my best work, but at least it's done.
5) Rain this evening, so I don't need to go and water my many pots.
See you tomorrow, peeps.Back after a very long break!0
