    SCRABBLE Nite.

Banged straight in with Brawling. Get in. 69. Thank you.

BoPsie gives a very POINTED response for 74.

Going to be a long nite!
Swept into the lead with HAIRY for 30!
Got another. LEVELLING. Easy, easy, easy?
OXEN Laid on the red square. Just after BoPsie got 38!
Score 298 228. Loads of tiles left.

Challenges flying in. Both declared words are good. We should introduce DSR and have only two challenges a game. Lose on if your challenge is incorrect. Game on. No tiles left.

One nil to BoP 355 to 280.

Poor start to the second game. BoPsie in with a challenge. Upheld. BoP's Q back on the rack. Tight.

154 to 156. I have REFERRED on hand for 64. Get it.

Thirty in it, two u's left. Feel a little sheepish. One gone, just got GUN to play and out. 2 nil

    Evening all.

D'aww Raffles - trust a cat to find the warmest place to sleep! (Isis is currently behind the sofa, under the radiator, clearly following the same reasoning!)

mhagster - glad to hear you got home safely.

DFV - you're quite right that another place is likely to be better, but it's still quite sad as I was intending to stay in this flat long-term and it now looks like that plan's off. :( If I'm offered the job after the interview on Tuesday I'll probably have to move anyway, so the timing might work out well, but I'm still a bit :undecided about the whole thing.

    1) Woke up to the delicious smell of a HM loaf, as I had left the BM on a timer overnight.

    2) LSD - just a few new cheap books on my kindle, including the most recent Bill Bryson book which I am promising myself as a reward for finishing the book I'm reading at the moment and really not enjoying. :(

    3) Entered some more competitions - I've now worked my way through to the last page of the competitions thread, meaning I've entered several hundred competitions over the last couple of months. Surely I have to win something?! (It doesn't really matter, of course, but I just feel like I'm not a proper comper until I've had my first win!)

    4) A batch of split pea and ham soup that is currently simmering away on the stove. I reckon I should get three or four portions out of it; there were two portions of chicken and ham pie last night and I've still got about half of the ham left, so it was a definite bargain!

    5) Lots of cuddles with Isis, who seems as relieved as I am that rain has stopped falling from the ceiling.

    6) Finally got round to trying on a pair of boots I bought online weeks ago and hadn't even taken out of their box (:o), and they fit beautifully. That's quite a relief as it's clearly far too late to return them now if they didn't!
Back after a very long break!

Broomstick - what is an unnecessary book? (Tenet of faith at risk, here.) Hurrah offspring sorting fence & emptying garage!
Tealady - Recycling chocolates very canny! Delighted your friend has found the right one & can lay off the amphibians!
mcculloch - hurrah turmeric working & rousing cheers guitar lessons paying off!
caterina - hurrah with kitchen sink! Health & Strength with everything else.
Frith - well done on thank you letters & have fun jewellery making (must ask our library if they might!)
Chickenopolis - sofa repairs sound wonderful! OH sounds a bonus - canny shoppper & knows what to do with a mallet. (Am I unusual in liking that in a man?!) A downloaded movie can surely be watched again? Well done that terrier! Freeview is loads of fun.
VickyA - washing leads to ironing? However have I managed to omit that step?!
DD - all I know of as critical for malaysia are sugarlumps. For when a meal is too hot. My lads have gone semi-nocturnal - school tomorrow will come as a surprise...
kittikins - phew to find out now about essay length! Cuddles are good.
mhagster - glad you're home & using green exercise to beat jetlag. Love son asleep on shoulder! Awww! First Home Grown tomato?!
sparrer - laundry blown dry? and not across 3 counties? Congratulations!

CnOm - impressed by the maintenance & exercise!
VJsmum - you haven't trained your some of your friends to still use the "Hullo pretty lady!"? I've one who still calls me "Beautiful" which is wonderful for morale even as I cheer his girl on gentling him to an altar... What is wrong with food-centric pleasures?!

lovefullshelves - I cling to the hope of mother brownie points. Someday. They do have nice manners, but the thank you letters will be All My Own Work! Healing nap excellent!
BoP - Raffles looks wonderful! A Dalek is fun for life... We good to unleash Martin? Given his foot's in plaster?
Muzicmaster - welcome! Keep us posted on the homemade dog food? <intrigued!>
Teacher2be - well done with that hoover!
CCP - oooh - pea & ham soup! There's memories & a big grin on a plate! All the very best with all the jumps needed in 2014!

    Today's pleasures
"Females." In tones of bewildered blasphemy. Nice to know I maintain the mystery & intrigue...

Squawking with laughter at a line in a Peabody mystery & realising I'd squalked at a pitch my son recognised - & hummed the next phrase from War if the Worlds to. We grinned at each other - happy moment!

Picking up a tool with a hand ratchet & refusing to let it go - heavy, cold & cost me all of £3 but I think it's part of cavalry picketing gear. Car booting, even at just-above-zero, is fun...

The approving noises from the chaps when I brought spam- wiches over. The chaps were cold & hungry - after an industrious silence, they were much improved!

Listening to the lads "tidying up"... No dire sounds but middling bickering & yittering. Pleasant - they'll sound very different after a day back at school tomorrow. (Mind you, likely so will I!)

Big hugs to all who need them, healing time to all who need it (including Martin, who's in plaster & seeing frac clinic tomorrow) & hoping roofs & fences stay put!

mhagster - delighted you're home safely. My brother is on your small island (Australia) until Tuesday. I'd avoid the Sydney region until then. :D

    My pleasures for today:

    1) Treated to an "All Day Breakfast" by the in-laws at a local garden centre. It was goooooooooooood, if a little unhealthy.

    2) Went to see my "boys" - the Leicester Tigers. Took the nephew and niece along and they joined the Junior Tigers Club. Nephew was picked to walk around with the mascot - cue and annoyed niece and a delighted aunt and uncle. :rotfl:

    3) HM Carrot and leek soup, made earlier in the week and defrosted today! Just as good as before!

    4) Ironing pile about to be completed by DH. :D Suspect I might do one or two though....

    5) Flicking through The Book People catalogue which popped through the letterbox yesterday. I don't NEED any books, but there's one which I heard mentioned the other day for a mere £3 and a 10 book set for a mere £6. Eeek. May be best if I just put the catalogue in the bin...

    Pleasures for today:

    1) A massive lie in!

    2) Listened to the Archers omnibus.

    3) School friend came round and hasn't long gone.

    4) Sausages for tea with braised red cabbage and mushrooms (because we have so many of them!)

    5) Bigger son has done nearly all his homework.

That's about it! School for bigger son tomorrow. Smaller son has an INSET day so we're going to have breakfast out after dropping bigger son at school then I think we'll go swimming.

Thank you for good wishes and messages of hope. Hugs and warm wishes to all in need.

    My five for the day:

1 - outing with my family, we went to see The Hobbit 2 in 3D, second time around, we had seen it in 2D. We all loved it, but DD and I had a nap in the middle! DS denies that he slept but DD says he saw him sleep. DH woke me up when I started snoring. But we loved it all the same. I am in love with Thorin the king dwarf!

2 - family meal out at local Chinese restaurant after cinema. Lovely, very fresh and tasty food. I managed to stick to (mainly) low carb except for the batter in two small pieces of tempura. We all enjoyed it and had fun sharing each other's food.

3 - we decided that we really want to have more family outings, more regularly. Especially as DD does not live at home anymore and DS is planning to move once he finds regular work, we need to stay close as a family.

4 - the outing has been funded by money I got from a couple of short term paying guests who stayed (unexpectedly) in our spare room for a few days.

5 - the paying guests leave tomorrow at 5 am. Even if I will have to be up at 4.30 to say goodbye, I am glad to have our home back to ourselves.

    Good night all.
Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).

    Evening

    Pleasures for today,
    1. Work up early but went back to sleep for a hour or two
    2. Cheese on toasted bread roll with a slice of pepperoni for brunch. Used last of the rolls and some Christmas cheese plus had the added benefit of tasting good.
    3. NSD
    4. Managed to use up another box of Christmas chocolates between DD and myself, oops
    5. Few more little jobs done, making a short list each day seems to be working.

Hugs to all who need them and hope all are staying warm and dry

Evening all. Didn't think I'd have time to post tonight but I've just stopped for a bit. River levels have risen so we're on flood warning and there are big lakes nearby. Everything seems fairly stable river-wise right now so fingers crossed. Praying that the bands of rain coming through are not too intense. The ground can't take more.

DfV, an unnecessary book does not normally exist but in 2014 it is one that costs money. We are packed out with books in our house and I'm sure there's a year's worth of reading that I've not touched yet. I've got access to a fab academic library if I need stuff for work so there's no excuse to buy, this year at least. (That's the theory anyway. :D)

    Five pleasures for Sunday:

    1. The services intended to help us came up trumps at tea time with four plus deliveries of sandbags and then one of sand for diy bags. The lorry just to and fro-ed between our local streets and the depot. The fire brigade have been in evidence as well, helping a flooded estate nearby. So grateful. :T

    2. DSs have helped loads today as well and we've done more sorting and decluttering as we've gone along. When the floods threatened last year I think we had to move much more 'stuff' upstairs. This time it feels a bit more sorted so maybe we are making headway.

    3. More gas canisters for our table-top cooker have been on my shopping list for a few weeks. I'd even done the online research to work out where to get them most cheaply locally. In the sorting I discovered that we actually had a total of ten hidden in two different places that I didn't realise we had. :D Feel like a squirrel forgetting where it's buried things.:o

    4. Met up with another MSEer [edited, now that she's mentioned it, to Kittikins :D] at lunchtime who took some resources off my hands (which made space for more books to be lifted from the ground floor onto the landing this afternoon!). Really glad to have found a good home for them and really, really glad to have made a new real-life friend - our quick cuppa extended into nattering through much of a lunch hour! :D

    5. Did a supermarket shop for yet more stocking up of basics and ended up with a bill of £68 which, due to vouchers (supermarket 20%-off offer, the Clipper tea voucher I won and another money off voucher) reduced it by ~ £20. £68 to £48 is a pretty big reduction :D

Right, off to find something suitably trivial on iplayer to watch/listen to while I carry on finishing sorting the front room/office.

    Sweet dreams

    B x

Hello Muzikmaster, hope there's enough choccy cake to share, nomnom!

    1. Met the very lovely Broomstick today when she gave me some amazingly useful magazines :):) THANK YOU xx

    2. Whilst DD monkeyed about on t'internet this morning, I read a fabulous book.

    3. I stayed up til very late last night finishing a good chick lit, courtesy of DD's Christmas buying choices :)

    4. Did spellings with DD whilst we were tidying up after dinner, as she has a big test coming up on her first day back (seems rather mean!!) and she only got "isosceles" wrong, which we were very chuffed at as it's a beggar to spell at the best of times!

    5. Iplayer!
