Welcome home chicken :j
Just a quickie as will write a post later, DS and I (did I mention DS is here for the weekend?) have had a hectic day and now having a quick 40 winks before we order dinner
Have a good evening, laterz0 -
Four more pleasures for today:
2) Nice lie-in this morning, despite Isis whirlwinding round the flat with her ball while I was trying to sleep.
3) Finally found something which I hope my incredibly-difficult-to-buy-for DM might like for Christmas. :j
4) Lazy afternoon - I should have been either studying or working on my essay, but I didn't do either.
5) Staying in this evening - a pleasure as the wind's got very whooshy. :eek:Back after a very long break!0 -
Chickenopolis - so good to have you round again!
CCP - :j :j whoop!
I wrote my Christmas cards today, but discovered I didn't have enough. I bought a few from the charity shop during the January sales, another 2 packs from a friend who sells Phoenix cards and evidently I was supposed to manage to "top up" after that. Mercy mission dash to the local Cancer Research shop and cards were topped up.
So, my 5 for today:
1) Wrapping presents for friends I'm seeing tomorrow. There are 3 children too, sudden panic when I realised that I hadn't got a present for any of them but a quick search of my stash of presents and they're each getting a book each!(bought from The Book People for emergencies like this!)
2) Trip to Costa with a friend. Seems that I had enough points to pay for coffees and a muffin. Made me look generous.
3) Some of the cards have been posted. Hurrah! One of DH's friends has apparently commented that they always enjoy reading our round robin letter, but this year I just haven't had the time... I've apologised in the card instead.
4) Sausages from the freezer for supper. DH is busy cooking them again. I'm getting used to this.... :rotfl:
5) £2 coin received in change today. I save my £2 coins to put towards my road tax due in October. Never covers it fully, but makes me feel better at least!Sealed Pot Challenge #021 #8 975.71 #9 £881.44 #10 £961.13 #11 £782.13 #12 £741.83 #13 £2135.22 #14 £895.53 #15 £1240.40 #16 £1805.87 #17 £1820.01 declared0 -
In no particular order -
1....but chicken 1st 'cos I have this stuck on end of flying finger:
- item #201001160089 sailing across Bay to Flee?
Lovely piece and yes, tout compris, parfaitement:-)
Surf the wave;)
2. Just in from more than interesting day, with memorable start - hence need for Spooky Men straight back on loop as we all can hear.
'Concrete' thrumming powerfully through & right now. bop - this is SO one for you and Raffles. Big Man Strut stuff. Fabulous.
3. http://www.girton.cam.ac.uk/guite-revd-malcolm
This marvellous and extraordinary man spoke, read some of his work and gave a stunning seminar/address to our small parish breakfast in near village before 8 this a.m. [Sadly, except for new Vic and husband,& youngest by about 93 years] Wish I could reproduce it here. All my old academia hungries were rabid with desire for rigorous discourse, filleting, debate. vjm and ccp - you were both excused:D & was greedy enough for the 5000.
Bought this,
http://www.malcolmguite.com/
from which talk body ventured out, accompanied by some from this:
http://www.malcolmguite.com/, which of course sent me into Edmund de Waal parallel territory and later mention of his new Exhibition at the Fitzwilliam was another touchstone.
Shall I keep on burbling for the next oomph pages? I do miss this cerebral playtime stuff. Dissertation titles, research paths, endless and tiresome puppy enthusiasm belt through head, summoning up rememberings from books and papers galore[all deffo. here at squat SOMEWHERE]to gut for THE nugget....:pexciting interior life, à l'&:p.
3. Turn off prattle-tap. There's a [STRIKE]£3.10[/STRIKE]10p w8rs luxury sandwich and 10p side salad waiting.
4. Village a bit beyonder than other - hosts various globally known equine spreads. Christmas Fair in dear little Church, ancient, comfortable, with 2 beautiful little stained glass remnant windows in porch to love[took pics, not these]

- and some excellent buys, if slightly costly. Worthwhile, very. Must make time to try and re-coup lost Spits on Bay of Eke. BNIB Montblanc cufflinks are a nice start...more of similar ilk and some lovely little old things, perfect gifty bits.
5. After free cappuccino, w8rs rtc area harikiri'd to 10p. Called friend in near village to determine Usefuls. Tried 3 times. No answer. Knew she was going out; had deposited a good M&S aran wool jumper en route. Dithered about how much/which etc., approached check-out, only to see her there ahead of me with daughter...
'I've been ringing you to see if you want these'[indicates]
'You're not there!'[accusing]
'You've already found them'[trolley Compare and Contrast exercise]
All loot sorted most enjoyably - inc. last 8 again:
http://www.waitrose.com/shop/Browse/Groceries/Fresh/Fish_and_Seafood/Fish_Counter
-happy haggle: £1. These are so good as workday munch-freeze well.
6. Recognise an envelope in post. Good. Can arrange pre-crimbo visit.
7. Brill News Quiz and Jeremy on best rant form. Pure delight. Lots of lovely catch-up listening to do, y compris isihac bien sûr. Heads up for Cabin Pressure tomorrow, last one of Series 2:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00lmcxj.
Perfect symmetry...we're back round to 'Concrete' again on SM 'Deep' CD.
McCulloch and Old Tractor - roll call? Hope all is well.

Answering the roll call, all is well, just that life is a bit quiet. Chicken, TG you are OK. Thanks for all other pleasures.
1.
Like VJsMum, my collecting hobby is Christmas tree decorations, here is a tiny bit of the evidence. Wooden bell shape bottom left is from Bethlehem and has a German wooden mouse in high chair behind it. Russian decoration bought in St Ives next to it.
Also in vision/part vision: poteen jug from Dublin, owl decoration from Lancashire, beach hut from Falmouth, Scottish Santa riding a sheep from Edinburgh, decoration made from Christmas stamps from Estonia, koala from Australia, buoy/lifebelt marker from Canada, baubles from Germany and Holland, various decorations from the Cotswolds and many that I made myself too, like the Santa face.
Tree itself is on Christmas No 33.
2. No really cold weather yet, touching wood. Found my microwave wheat bags & HWBs but cannot find my 2 Cossack-style 'fur' hats, luckily I had bought a new one for this year. Suspect old ones binned accidentally on Dr C's clear- out.
3. Dr C. recovering from a fluey type bug, he was ill when he had leave booked, thank heavens.
4. Got 2 A!di vouchers plus some nice free samples. £20 of Am*zon vouchers from surveys.
5. Some interesting new bits of work - a lot of work for the cash, but better than not having anything to do. I will be busy over Christmas!Erma Bombeck, American writer: "If I had my life to live over again... I would have burned the pink candle, sculptured like a rose, that melted in storage." Don't keep things 'for best' - that day never comes. Use them and enjoy them now.0 -
M-early Christmas everybody!
Sun is shining , birds are singing and everyone is still sound asleep.....bliss!
Sitting on my sofa in my office looking out into the garden.....bliss
I woke up at opposite end of the bed this morning....no idea when I decamped down there! ( sometimes when I can't sleep I move pillows to the opposite end of bed and sleep better but I'm usually aware that I've done it!
M-early gifts exchanged at silly o'clock this morning and I think everyone pleased with their loot. Most bought in sales or with vouchers and children were told there's a recession in this household at the moment and were okay with that. It is nice to be past the stage of where expectations of Santa bringing gifts might be too high....but I do miss the magic of the anticipation and excitement that Santa brought. However, if you had heard my children at the stroke of midnight last night and DD1 crying out "santa's been" ...well maybe a little bit of magic remains.
Just having a saved in the freezer rtc croissant with home made strawberry jam for breakfast , with DD1 before she heads out to work!
Aaaaah. .....Christmas without the fuss...bliss!
chicken good to see you back in the coop...just need tealady just to pop in and say hello now!
Enjoy your evening0 -
Oh good, mcculloch:hello:

Evening all. Nearly lost the post- site logged me out but copied it before it vanished for good. Phew.
Kk, congratulations. Really positive end to the term.:T
CCP, fantastic about the interview.:T
:hello: Chicken
lfs, it seems like those five weeks have gone really quickly.
Ampersand, what an interesting mix that man is.
McCulloch, lovely decorations. Our tree goes up on Solstice.
Five pleasures for Saturday:
1. VickyA, I loved your idea of saving £2 coins for car tax. 'I can do that', I thought. I knew I had two coins in my purse so I went right away to put them in what I thought was an empty savings pot to start my car tax fund for 2014 and found a £20 note that I'd squirreled away and forgotten about. So I put the £2 coins in the pot and the £20 note in my purse for Xmas shopping and it feels as if I've made £16 quite unexpectedly. Thank you!or should it be :j ? (You doing star jumps on the trampoline
)
2. Very useful trip to the dump. Loads of cardboard boxes have gone into recycling and it feels as if we have a bit more space.
3. Made stirfry and noodles for supper from all sorts of tired bits and pieces and some more freezer veg. Ended up very tasty. The freezer is now down to one drawer-full with plans in place to reduce it lots more tomorrow.
4. DS2 and I went for a wander round the allotment site. It was deserted but huge. It was hard to work out which were abandoned plots and which were resting just because of the time of year that it is. Anyway, I've emailed the bloke with the list and will wait for his response. It looks as if they allow small self-build sheds and DS2 suddenly became very motivated at the idea of making one - it's very much his kind of thing.I've had allotments in the past and a veg garden that was similar in size once upon a time but it's been ages since we've seriously grown our own.
5. Getting going with filling in next year's calendar. Half the year is booked up already! I love filling in something when it's all new.
Sweet dreams.
