Thank you for all your thoughts. I've just rung my ill friend - she is still pretty washed out, but the doc is monitoring. She is in sheltered housing, TG, so a very close eye is being kept on her.
She was living on her own 200 miles away until a short time ago, her reluctance to 'make a fuss' nearly killed her in February, when hospital treatment was almost too late. Then her condition was mis-diagnosed; like many wheelchair users she has multiple health issues.
Broomstick, Amazon Vine, the programme that offers you free stuff, is by invitation only. Basically Amazon look at your reviews and if they like what they see, they invite you to become a reviewer. I didn't know it existed, being unobservant, and thought it was some sort of scam to start with! However I did send for some books and gradually other items were made available
Amazon decide what items to offer you based on what you have reviewed in the past; as I'm an adult education tutor and have reviewed a lot of teaching support materials, I periodically get offered books in that line.
I've also reviewed kitchen and beauty 'stuff' so get offered that too. There are frustrations sometimes - I got offered the Wartime Farm book after I bought it!
You have a targeted newsletter once a month, with items specially chosen for you, followed by an open to all-comers newsletter. This month I got the food processor targeted, and the guitar accessories were open to all. You have to be super-quick to get the really good stuff, my connection isn't, so I sometimes miss out.
The drawback is that you cannot dispose of items- I wouldn't sell them anyway as that's a no-no, but gradually my house is filling with books! Children's books are reviewed for me by my grandchildren, but I do read them first.
1. Have finally got around to applying for a (disabled persons') Blue Badge.
2. I also don't trust the local council not to lose my birth certificate that I have to send off, so I applied for a copy online. So easy, except...
( Not a pleasure but I feel I must mention it. )
Discovered whilst finding my birth records that my mother's maiden name is recorded online against my birth name along with place of birth and the quarter of the year in which the birth was registered.
That's a bit of a worry, my sister got very upset about it when I told her. The reason? Just think how often you are asked your mother's maiden name as a security question by banks, etc.
3. Party at friends to look forward to tonight. Will take bottles that didn't get drunk over Christmas.
4. Haven't put on as much weight as I normally do over Christmas.
5. Books to enjoy, plus the odd TV programme.Erma Bombeck, American writer: "If I had my life to live over again... I would have burned the pink candle, sculptured like a rose, that melted in storage." Don't keep things 'for best' - that day never comes. Use them and enjoy them now.0 -
An early post as I have a few things to do later
McCulloch pleased to hear your friend is in sheltered, although it's not what it used to be with so many transferring to 'supported' housing. My DMs accom has recently transferred and they now have no resident warden, just a mobile three times a week, no activities, no pull cords (they've all been given pendants which isn't very helpful) and higher rents, of course. 'Tweren't like that when I managed a sheltered scheme! Well done on the blue badge, got my new one just before Christmas and went shopping with a friend, the parking warden hadn't seen the new ones before and the buggah booked us! We won, of courseot The baking sounds yum. It's teeming here, I'll be up to share one of your dry days (and crumble)
Chicken you get well now, can't start the NY with a temp - unless of course you have a raised temp through sitting under a blue sky whatever that is
1. Couldn't sleep so was up at 5.30am with a cuppa. Even beat my coach driver neighbour who is usually out long before I get up. Sat and watched dawn break, the sun burning a hole through black clouds, it was breathtaking. Pity the sun decided to move on elsewhere afterwards
2. Attacked the bathroom, didn't miss an inch. It looks so shiny I shan't want to spoil it by having my shower later!
3. Then attacked the lounge, de-haired the cushions and carpet and polished the sofas. Just hope my company doesn't slide off them this evening
4. Started to prep a small buffet of jackets with cheese and/or prawns (can't abide those orange slimy things _pale_ so none of them in my kitchen), tomato and feta salad, asparagus pancakes and a mess, my variation of Eton which I've named after my little town. Most could be done well in advance so minimal cooking when we get back from meeting other friends.
5. This is the first year for maybe 20 years I've been out on NYE, having always had the DGC so their Mum and Dad could enjoy themselves, and latterly when DD has been working in the pub. I feel quite excited and have changed my mind what to wear at least 23 times. So far...
Wishing you all a peaceful, prosperous and healthy 2013, a huge thank you to Martin for the forums, and to all of you for your kindnesses and thoughtfulness over the past year. Enjoy your evening whatever you do, not too much wobbleade some of you (ykwya!). Will be back on 1st Jan, til then stay safe and God bless. S xxx0 -

Same here.:p1. washed off all the gunge I left on my hair overnight, it's so soft it's impossible to do anything with now! Feels lovely though
I always wonder how people do that without getting conditioner all over the pillow and bed covers or do you just wash them in the morning?:)
1. Delish veg sausage rolls dipped in tomato ketchup for lunch.
2. Watching Stardust on telly.:T
3. Having a glass of something alcoholic at the moment, hic.
4. I got home from taking the dog for a walk just before it started bucketing down.
5. I'm feeling better from this cold finally.0 -
Good evening all !
Sparrer - thank you xx
5 for today
1. Work ok and very quiet.
2. My friend at work who owns one of the hens by proxy , got us a thank you present of a tartan chicken jacket which I will put on her hen in the morning .Henry the hen has a bald tummy you see as she is moulting.
3.OH has tidied up his office (our second bedroom) it looks better .
4. Popped over Mums to play with the tiny terrier before we go out. .
5. Off to my bothers house with Mum and OH - I doubt we will be awake to see the NY in though , I am tired already..
so HAPPY NEW YEAR to you all !!:AToo fat to be Felicity Kendal , but aim for a bit more of the good life :A0 -
1. Fun time at the panto this afternoon
2. Yummy YS goodies in the supermarket to finish off the hopefully month's shop!
3. Somehow snapped my car key in the ignition!!! but managed to get it out and thankfully have a spare. Phew! Have read on here that I could get a normal key cutting place to make me a key and keep it on the ring with the electronic fob and I'll be fine. That'll save me a huge bunch of cash.
4. Popped into Brighton to pick up a my gorgeous framed picture for the kitchen, which cost me less than £5 as I had a P*ypal credit that took care of most of it"Qu'ils mangent de la brioche" will soon be gracing my kitchen wall
5. Also took advantage of a buy one get one half price offer in HMvee to buy a couple of great presents. NO MORE SPENDING NOW for as long as humanly possible!!
6. Have been invited to friends for parlour games and maybe a glass of wine tonight, hoorah!0 -
Evening all.cccp - you are getting too many coldy things close together. I think you'd better return to your SIGNATURE OF YELLOWNESS
You're quite right - the world needs more yellow things and less colds!
Chicken - thanks for the get well wishes - I hope your temperature has now gone down so you can enjoy your NYE in peace.
Kittikins - that's good news about the key - I had to have a new electronic one made a few months ago and they really are ouch-inducingly expensive.
1) A non-work day - I wouldn't have been at work anyway after a night spent tossing and turning, coughing, snuffling and shivering, and generally getting very little sleep, but at least, when I finally got got to sleep just as it was getting light, I didn't have to worry about getting up again half an hour later to phone in sick.
2) Started the first jar of my HM plum and ginger jam and it's not bad at all, although it's disappointingly runny even though I boiled it for ages. I'll just have to try again at some point, which is a shame.
3) Dragged myself down to W'rose as I was nearly out of tissues: there was a disappointing lack of decent yellow stickies (I might have done better if I'd gone a couple of hours later, just before they closed), but I was pleased to get a whole French soft cheese for £4.50. I make a point of trying new types of cheese whenever they've been YS'd, and I look forward to trying this one when my sense of taste comes back a bit.
3b) I'm also in line for some cheap (or possibly free) mince pies as I bought some that were half price but realised when I got home that they'd charged me full price by mistake: if they refund DTD, as they sometimes do, I'll have free mince pies. The only thing better than a mince pie is a free mince pie, and the only thing better than a free mince pie is a whole box of free mince pies!:money:
4) Watched Muppet Treasure Island this afternoon - there's nothing like a bit of Muppety goodness when you're feeling under the weather!
5) Had a sudden craving for breaded chicken for dinner, and found a bit lurking at the back of the freezer, so it's helping with the great freezer-emptying plan as well.
I'm now starting to feel very slightly better - or at least less actively dreadful - but I very much doubt I'll see midnight, so I'll wish everyone a very happy New Year now, and hope those of you venturing out have a great time.Back after a very long break!0 -
ccp- don't you have your My W8rose card yet? The freebie cappuccino or poison of choice is such a pleasing stepping stone during any against-clock, short daylight hours atm. Have used much of day trying to sort printer, Epson chat and help on other Thread. Still won't play.
1. It works in little Branches too - comme Grafton Centre today. Finally made it to Library, but from P&R. 1hr bus ride to and from village is too much daylight to use up.
2. Trying a Stella Rimington novel. Style so far o.k., a bit pedestrian, but interesting given her b/g.
3. msg from neighbour that crimbo cake, made only a few days beforehand, is 'absolutely best ever and nearly gone now.' I still haven't tried either.
4. UPS uplifted 2 Famberley boxes for NZ by 9 - lovely fella - and I posted 3 others to France, NZ, Oz, all with handwritten letters! It's a general Given that my handwriting keeps recipients busy until I next see them and attempt translation....
5. SOS Bus Duty tonight, so can't be alcoholically festive, but may call in to couple from other day en route.
Wishing you all certainty in your secret heart's thoughts, ceasings of pain, resolution in decision, and help and support from surprising quarters as new steps are taken and different paths present themselves. Be assured they will.
I'm thinking of many of you as individuals as I write, though 'known' only virtually.
See you next year - and indeed, sparrer, thankyou Martin mse, Mrs mse and baby Sapphire. We'll need this site more and more as the next few years progress.CAP[UK]for FREE EXPERT DEBT &BUDGET HELP:

Evening.
mcculloch, thanks so much for the explanation about Vine. I'll have to look again at the things I can review, top-up my reviews and see if I can get noticed!:D
My five pleasures for the end of this year:
1. NSD and NPD.
2. The house has been cleared up from Christmas: decorations and tree lights back in their boxes, and droopy artificial tree in the boot ready to be taken to the dump. Now on the look out for a replacement in the sales ready for next year.
3. Have gone through a ton more clearing out of paperwork and shredding. More stuff to recycle. :T
4. Snooze mid-afternoon.
5. A nice big mug of hot chocolate... and now off to find something good to watch on iplayer while I tackle more paperwork. I'm on a roll!
I'll be lighting a candle at midnight to give thanks for the old year and remembrance of those who are no longer with us, and hope for a positive and peaceful 2013. I'd welcome candle-lighting company if anyone else would like to join me!
Sweet dreams

 Happy New Year everyone! I'm off to bed :rotfl: dont' think I will be able to keep my eyes open until twelve.
Five from me before I hit the hay;
1. Sales shopping. May have got a few gift sets to put away for ye old gift drawerI was quite restrained though seen as my New Years resolution is to hoard less rubbish. I am going to keep a better record of what I buy so I don't buy more presents than people. Again.
2. Curtain shopping with mum. We were both in a silly giggly mood. We used to do it all the time but since I moved out and got all grown up (ha! ha!) we don't get the time very often.
3. Spending sometime with nan and grandad.
4. Yummy non MSE Chinese take away. Could have made it ourselves. Neither one could be bothered
5. A brand new year starts tomorrow. I like the fresh feeling that New Year's Day brings.
Hope everyone enjoys the rest of 2012 and have a fabulous start to 2013. See you next year folks xComper, Blogger & OS-erCompetition prizes: £6/£20150
