VJsmum - I thought of you at work yesterday, when a colleague mentioned someone she used to work with who took 45 minutes to mark 3 dissertations - it's obviously nowhere near as time-consuming as everyone else makes out. ;) (Honestly, did he think anyone would imagine he'd done more than glance at the dissertations in that length of time?!)

What an idiot he was for saying it. It hardly serves the students well. It usually takes me 2-3 hours for each one. I read them through first and then go back to the beginning and mark them, check references etc. I feel I owe it to the student who wrote it to read every word at least once - but usually twice. I am being "mentioned in dispatches" at work as I have just marked 16 of them - when I only work an 18 hour week that is quite some time! I'm embarrassed to be so praised though as it was only because I've little else to do.
    1) Got my hair done at my usual salon. No-one has noticed but I feel a lot better!

THe only one who usually notices here is DD - OH rarely does, even if it is quite different. As long as you feel better, that is the important thing.

McC - love your groovy stick. All sorts of things happen that we haven't planned, but it is our attitude to it which matters. My mum was disabled through arthritis for many years and, eventually, needed a wheelchair. She was only in her early 60's and had fought it for a long time - but I persuaded her into it with the argument that it would give her more freedom. FOr once, I was right and she never looked back - the places she was then able to go to that she couldn't before revolutionised her life. I hope, should I need to, that I can take my own advice.

DD - it has to hurt, otherwise it never meant anything and that would be worse. But it is an awful feeling, for sure. You WILL come through this and be happy again. Such early days still..

Yayy for the piggies - and the school. Though a heck of a trek

Hugs to everyone else - whether you want one or not :D

    1. Busy day yesterday - got a stash of stuff from the farm shop for a few quid (though then spent a fortune in Ald! and MrM - but have stocked up because of me going away again on Thurs)
    2. Yoga - getting better at it and I didn't feel sick, bonus. THis teacher concentrates on getting postures right and opening up the chest. Chest conditions are a problem that run in my family (mum had COPD as well as arthritis :( and 2 aunties died of lung cancer, as well as that there is a lot of asthma) so I need to look after it.
    3. Lunch with friends
    4. DD had a lovely night out with her friends. The pleasure for me particularly was that she wasn't too late back so Mum's taxi wasn't too onerous
    5. I have caught up on the washing.:T

Off to Lunnon today. DD's birthday pressie in July was tickets to Phantom of the Opera. She has elected to take me instead of one of her friends - I think she knows that I will pay for everything else, if she takes me :rotfl: !! But the trains are free for us and I have vouchers for an italian restaurant. I am going to treat us to an eye wateringly expensive ice cream in Harrods :cool:
I wanna be in the room where it happens

    Dkw's happening.
I've posted twice over the last couple of days, but they're not here now, not that i checked at the time. Just hit the Send thingy.
Try again, minimalist re-cap in no order of any kind.

dd-as sparrer says, and I'm glad you have a w/e of Things To Do,People To See. Just remember to stuff all the hugs from this Thread into your pockets, capacious bag, knicker elastic to grab onto when you need.
Frith-improving piggy news is good, but ss school news sounds even better! Could it be This is The One, at last? You really are doing brilliantly, ropey or other - and by this a.m., let's hope it's more other than t'other. Glad, too, that a level neighbourliness with Mr N is re-establishing. Keep it there for your sons and his, no more, no less.
pk- already a fortnight in the new job. Another one, then first salary, well-deserved.

More than 1 - new batteries in my kitsch and plastic-y birdsong clock which I defiantly love still, one year on - and it's just blackbirded 8 o'clock. It lifts me, every time I hear the hour sung to me and for me. That's how it feels.

    1. Spitalfields v. poor on Thursday, but a different chap as neighbour - Iranian, Edinburgh-based, interesting stock, life story ditto and kind. As usual, everyone looked out for each other and in view of the down-ish day generally, we all seemed to take time to appreciate this in each other. Try again next week. At least covered costs and same again.

    2. Several long-haul ems and visit hier. Time of year=time dragging. Always feel reflective en route and back, which season and landscape can only amplify. That so apt collective, a 'murder of crows' gathered several hundred strong, for no apparent reason, down one half of a stark and unremarkable field.

    3. Robin watched me as I watched robin the other morning. He was pecking at the remaining beans - just one cane. We were just a metre apart - and he sang!

    4. Wonderful listening hier matin:
DID - had never heard of this guest, but so glad I listened

    and this was TERRIFIC:

and this from Mark Easton on cyberspace democracy is sound, thoughtful , concerning stuff:

to end with wonderful Alan Bennett, whose latest work has[most satisfyingly for him and all of us]ruffled up a few of Them[and I'm always for that]:

Amid all the current corked-up Beeb furore, I'm taking the Reithian stand and STILL holding the line for all that is fine and best in it, particularly this facility of i-player.

    5. DID find some fireworks, next village along last night. Just made it, despite lost in thought mindset which had me on wrong road. Luckily only a few miles done before I realised, backtracked and saw correct village fire engine lit up as a pointer to vicarage field. Met nice people, new-to-here farmers, interesting talk. Everyone happy. Children left alone to muck around in the dark, run off, play, do 'dangerous' things - as should be. A lovely old VW camper was trailed about with lights, 60's music rocked forth, mulled wine flowed. Low key, great fire, Ooh and Aah fireworks.

Woke early to last half of 'My Family and Other Animals' on 4X[sorry, yet another RECOMMENDED]
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/search/schedule/?q=my%20family%20and%20other%20animals

It's raining and I have mucky load-up-trailer dump runs to do, clearing last of neighbour's DIY leftovers. And whatever the rest of day may shape up with. I know what it should be, but don't see it happening in this weather. Rugby and tennis to keep up with, though:-)

  • Do not forgets your poppy today. Mine is for skid marks brother. The first is thrown away, wasted like he was in 1982.

It was fun, the hairs stood. Then it was real, then it was not fun.

RAF Waddington. 1982. For Skid Marks. Sir Galahad.

    Lest any one should forget.

And also, boycott T this weekend. They deem fit to sell more evil, after the Halloween, and exploit this at Midnight on Monday. There is no game in war, no truth. The first casualty of war is truth. As I stated at church council, I cannot condone any game that portrays the use of guns as a harmless effect. Guns kill. Full stop. So show your support by not giving T any cash this weekend, but instead give to the red box.

    Morning all :)

Just a line or two while I watch the Lord Mayors Show. It's part of my annual routine, as is the Remembrance Service and the Festival of Remembrance. I'll be remembering all who gave us our freedom, in particular my father who was a glider pilot (Red Beret) shot down over Arnhem, rescued by the German underground, and lived with the physical and mental scars until he died at the age of 72. So very proud. I'm visiting DM tomorrow, she gets very tearful at this time so I just sit and hold her hand during the silence.

If you mean Mr T the supermarket TILAMS I've boycotted them for years, the most immoral, unethical shop I've ever come across.

ampersand pleased you got to see your fireworks at last, you certainly earned that treat!

Speaking of treats my lovely neighbour send her DD to my door a short while ago with a a cream slice which I'll have with my cuppa this afternoon :o

mcculloch the dye looks very dark this morning! But I'm very impressed with the quality and how my hair feels, so no more £6/7 dyes in future. I had similar problems with the new foam ones, because of arthritis it was impossible to keep squeezing the bottle

DD wishing you a calmer weekend, good that you have things planned. Take our love and thoughts with you :)

VJsmum have a fantastic day, it sounds an amazing treat. Never been to Harrods but it's on my bucket list, enjoy every single lick of the ice cream, the theatre and the Italian restaurant, what a lucky DD she is :D

Kitchen floor is dry, time to put all the white goods back. Let's hope I don't over balance the ff as I did when I pulled it out - a very sticky moment!

Have a sunny day whatever the weather S

    Evening all.

My day today didn't start well - mog yowled me awake at quarter to four, so I went to see what he wanted and stepped in a puddle of cat vomit. _pale_ At least I found out what he was trying to tell me!

    1) After clearing up the mess, I went back to bed with mog and slept until late morning: I've been feeling horribly tired for the past couple of days so probably needed the extra hours.

    2) Mooched down to Gunwharf Quays - it's been a grey sort of day, but it's not cold so it was a fairly pleasant walk.

    3) Spent a bit of time wandering around the food fair - it was only a small one but had some lovely free tasters, and I got part of my dad's Xmas present and some tasty (if not really needed :o) bits for myself.

    4) Ordered a big bag of cat litter and a new litter tray online: both items were reduced and I got an additional 10% off on top. :money:

    5) RM pepperoni pizza tonight, to which I'll add some chopped veggies to make it marginally healthier.

    Have a nice evening, all.
Back after a very long break!
  • It was just a lovely day.
    1. I woke up shocked as for the first time in about a year I slept right through for 8 hours, I was asleep apparently before DH which is completely unheard of, so feel good today.:D
    2. We had Bacon rolls for brunch.:)
    3. Then we went out to a local town where there is an amazing fruit and veg stand we bought a cabbage bigger than a football, a big bowl of bananas, 3kg potatos, a bowl of shallots, another of carrots, and another of peppers, after we paid £4 for the lot we dragged it back to the car and pondered off.:o
    4. Did the charity shops and have an amazing find, they are a pair of socks £1.50 doesn’t sound good I hear you say but best way I can describe them is big red socks with a winter pattern on, inside thou there is another white lining of pure soft fluffy warmth, I am wearing them against my ankle with all the hardware in and they are fantastic. I would dearly love to know where to get them. Hmm I just did some research on the web and found them, they are these from M&S apparently and retail at yikes £15 http://www.marksandspencer.com/Fair-Knitted-Moccasin-Slipper-Boots/dp/B002CNI014?ie=UTF8&ref=sr_1_56&nodeId=529574031&sr=1-56&qid=1352474947&pf_rd_r=1MGQ9GS2X8W7QQDSM4JW&pf_rd_m=A2BO0OYVBKIQJM&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_i=529574031&pf_rd_p=321381387&pf_rd_s=related-items-3&?extid=af_a_GoldenFeeds&source=affwindow&extid=af_a_Uncategorised_36799&comgp=36799&awc=1402_1352571010_8ca996bb02456e0737a5c5b4c03ff736
    5. The 99p shop had a load of packs of 6 walkers “transformer snack” crisps, they said as they were tomorrows use by date we could have 4 6 packs for 99p, we did take them up on it, working on the principle walkers tend to be ok a bit longer, and they are part of the work packed lunch so will get used up.:p
    6. Stopped in at Homebase, and picked up a big 3 litre dianthus on sale for 50p went to pay and it was 10p, result I hope this is a plant that re grows next year.:rotfl:
  • SPARRAHAWK. Bang on the buttonb dear!
