Thanks all, I always think people are yawning behinds their hands when I mention family trees which is why I don't often although we are hooked on it. The only skeleton we've found is a ships captain who rammed another ship in the Thames estuary and two boys fell overboard and drowned. The captain bought his way off the gallows off 200 guineas...what price a life?! I like the DNA idea, we know we're from the Walpole villages on the Norfolk/Suffolk borders in the early 1700's but before that all family records were lost in a fire so we may never know. I'll stop now
Frith that's a lot of Christmas presents for a parent to buy! My step dad was one of 14, his little Mum ruled with an iron hand in a velvet glove and they all grew up to be decent citizens, as people did in those daysChickenopolis wrote: »Looked out of the window and Lexie hen had the tail of a Jackdaw in her beak - Jackdaw walked off and Lexie had most of its tail left in her mouth:eek: Little bu**ers !
:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
Hope Stephen is okay
Just going to meet a friend at the market to get the end of day bargains so back with my 5 later0 -
My 5 for Friday are:
1: Son walked to school with a friend, so I didn't need to get the car out.
2: Had lovely shower using smellies I got for my Birthday yesterday.
3: DS 1 took me with him to when he went to the wholesalers to get more equipment for his work, then we went to my mothers and had cup of tea and a good ole chat.
4: Walked home from mothers, calling at DS3 school to ask about a school trip to Belgium WW1 Commemerative sites (£72 - yikes !!!, and got to pay Monday if wants to go). DS3 says he would like to go, so got to find the money somehow, beg, steal or borrow. I always try to not let money stand in way of educational trips like this.
Then continued walking home, 45minutes in total.
5: Me and DH took DS3 to play football for county team - proud parents))
keep smiling,
chinagirl x0 -
Many happy returns, China girl
£72?? that sounds like a bargain (I know it still has to be found), I went to the war grave of my mum's uncle a couple of years ago. I was only the second family member to visit and I had promised mum I would. It made me sad to realise how easy it was to get to and that i could have taken her on a day tripUnfortunately when I found out where it was, Mum was too ill to go and she died before I went
But I can't beat myself up about it - none of us knew or had bothered to find out. Including her. At least I went and was glad I did. You aren't allowed to put flowers on the war graves but DS found a conker and put that on - bought a lump to the throat.
I wanna be in the room where it happens0 -
Chicken:- Loving the “hair dip”, sorry to hear about gull, did the gull rescue not help
Chinagirl:- The school trip sounds like a bargin.
1.Did a silly amount of gardening with DH, about 5 hours worth, but its a bit disconcerting that it doesn’t look like we have done that much. A lot of moving old rockery stones from the side of the house creating an actual rockery, moving plants from pots to ground, moving plants which had water gel to give them a chance but have decided now’s a good time to bud, into the green house, I am sitting here with muscular pains of muscles somewhere in my stomach..:rotfl:
2.Birds in the garden impatiently waiting for us to pack up so they can see what’s offered up:)
3.Toad in the hole currently cooking away.
4.I have enough leftover bacon and sausages should be able to pull together a full cooked brekkie tomorrow.:D
5.NSD / NPD.0 -
Evening all.
I've had one of those really frustrating days today where I kept trying to do things and just hitting obstacles - I wanted to do some gardening but the heavens opened before I got out there, I tried to open a new ISA but my web browser has taken a dislike to the provider's website and keeps crashing every time I try to look at anything, and I couldn't change the bed as I'd planned as what I thought was a duvet cover in the bottom of the drawer was actually a pair of pillow cases.
I must be able to find at least five good things, though:
1) Lots of cuddles with mog, who seems to have forgiven me for taking him to the vet to [STRIKE]be tortured[/STRIKE] have his claws clipped yesterday.
2) Managed to make my way up to L!dl (even after nearly 7 years in Portsmouth I still struggle with the one-way system on some of the back streets) and picked up various bits, including a nice treat of some ginger wobbleade.
3) Made a big batch of savoury mince, stretched with veg and lentils, some of which will be turned into a pie for tonight's dinner, and the rest frozen for another time.
4) As I was out on Thursday evening I still have an episode of Wartime Farm to watch.
5) I still don't need to use the central heating - when I spoke to my energy company to arrange the refund they CS lady commented on how little gas I use, which made me feel quite proud of myself. :money:
chinagirl - I did a similar trip when I was at school (quite a while ago!) and really enjoyed it: I hope you can find the money and your DS finds it as good as I did.
sparrer - my DM's done a lot of family tree research and, interestingly enough, I've got links to Norfolk as well - my sister and I have often talked about going to have a look for our ancestral village, and might actually get around to it one day!
KB - smoked paprika's my favourite spice, too - there's very few foods that aren't improved by a sprinkling of paprika, I find!
giddynici - I'm glad to hear you're settling into your new home.
DD - I'd rather not have any slugs, thanks - I've only just tracked down and removed the one that kept leaving slime trails all over the carpet!
Have a good evening, all.Back after a very long break!0 -
Good evening all !
VJsmum - that is a sad story, but touching that DS put a conker on the grave .
Sparrer - ooh how intriguing! My family name is almost like the word "war" in French or "old mare " in German- how fitting
Chinagirl - happy birthday for yesterday x
5 for today
1. Hens quiet all day .. they must be plotting ..
2.Made some custard powder and white chocolate cookies - Very nice (not low g.i in any way ).. However, the food processor kind of smoked a bit and then stoppedOH is taking it apart and keeps tutting and sighing .
3. , Made a marinade of soy sauce, garlic, peanut oil and sweet chilli sauce - put some chicken breast and peppers in it and then put them on a skewer in the oven . Had this with egg fried rice- and some prawn toasts .
4 Had a long chat with my sister who lives in the "Big Smoke"- she has epilepsy and can drift off mid conversation . She was o.k today though - she told me she saw a man dragging a dog along and he hit it on the head with the lead for no reason at all - she then got out of the car and flew for him and his wife . He denied it at first and she said "but I saw you !"- the freak then said it was "only a tap" and she then called him a Bar Steward and walked off. Some people should not be allowed to have pets .
5.Ordered some recycled beer bottles that have been turned in to goblets , this will make a nice birthday present for my niece . They were on offer and are quite quirky and the postage and package is free this weekend .
Have a good evening all !
eta PK - Stephen the Seagull was not hurt just shocked - he has been a visitor here for over 10 years and I can almost pick him up he is so trusting. The hens usually ignore him and he ignores them . In fact when I clean out the hen house he usually stands on the roof like an inch or so from my face !:AToo fat to be Felicity Kendal , but aim for a bit more of the good life :A0 -
Ahhh I didn't realise that's fantastic.0

Frith wishing you continued patience with the school re SSon, It must be incredibly frustrating to watch their errors mount and mount, rather than things improve.
Sparrer my parents were Eastern European and finding out a family tree would be difficult, if not impossible, but I love what everyone else uncovers about theirs. My cousin in Estonia knows a few details but we don't know much. My mum had lost all her immediate family (father, mother, brother, aunt who was her guardian) by the time she was 16.
My ex-husband was the son of a US serviceman, placed for adoption by his mother at birth. I would love to know what the ethnic origin of the American was, as both my children are very dark - eyed. A Canadian friend took one look at their pictures and reckoned Native American.
Collected pleasures:-
1. Having a major paperwork organisation session. My old filing box broke, but I realised I had the perfect replacement that I no longer needed for community teaching paperwork.
2. Filling up the recycling bin with stuff that I had hung on for no good reason.
3. Washing on the line in October! Getting through the ironing too, and enjoying listening to music as I did so. Plus seeing that the latest batch of laundry gloop worked really well at all temps and types of clothing. No white marks on dark clothes, as some report. I've never had this but I gave some to a friend and that's what she got.
4. I'm not much of a TV watcher, but there have been some good programmes on, including Wartime Farm of course.
Also another book from Amazon Vine in the post, in the All That Matters series which deals with topics that are important to the world. I got Philosophy by Julian Baggini a few weeks ago, today's arrival was Muhammad by Ziauddin Sardar.
5. More NSD's, and tidying a cupboard I discovered four packets of couscous hidden away. Love this stuff.
6. I posted a painting I have of a Cumbrian house (now a BB but once used by HM Forces) on a Facebook group, I felt sure others on the group would have fond memories of it, as I do, and I was right, some funny and lovely comments.
7. Edit to add, the racing. Not just the Cesarewitch, which was today. That was historic, Aaim to Prosper - not a typo, it's 2 letter a's- became the first horse to win it for the second time. I always liked this horse as my initials are AIM. It's a tough race, it always has a massive field and is over 2 miles, a real test of stamina for flat horses.
Also the near - veteran Regal Parade got his nose in front for the first time in 3 years for 80 year old Milton Bradley, his trainer. Milton's only had him since June. It was quite a big race, so that was lovely.
8. Your pleasures.Erma Bombeck, American writer: "If I had my life to live over again... I would have burned the pink candle, sculptured like a rose, that melted in storage." Don't keep things 'for best' - that day never comes. Use them and enjoy them now.0 -
My 5 pleasures for today so far (Saturday).
1) Bit of a lie in. It's strange with all these good sleeps that I am now waking up 8ish on a Saturday, not waking up later then just lying there, exhausted.
2) Weeded the front strip of garden between the cottage and the road. It is only narrow but the length of the house, it's surprising how many different plants are in there. Dug up the nasty plant at the end. It was a vicious cactusy thing with a spike of black and white flowers that looked like broad bean flowers!
3) Up to date with the washing.
4) Watched son doing jumps on their bikes.
5) Played with the lego with bigger son for a while.
6) COLD and damp. Stove going well.
7) Watching Strictly and looking forward to Casualty.0 -
Its interesting reading about everyones family trees. My gran (maternal) started researching our family tree before she started with altzheimers. My grans family were barging people most were listed as canal boatman, keelman or coal heavers on birth & marriage certs and some were captains of barges in the south yorkshire area. It was fascinating to find out about great uncle stan who was awarded the BEM in 1942 after single handedly manning the gun of his ship so the crew could abandon ship and get to safety, and Grandads cousin awarded the Military medal for bravery at Pegasus Bridge. I love "who do you think you are?"
For today:
1. Lie in. DS made me a cup of tea before going to his police support volunteer job
2. Lots of washing done and dried whilst playing rain roulette .... washing out... rain - washing in.... suddenly stopped - washing out.... rain
3. afternoon nap after running around taking 4 loads of washing in and out
4. baked some carrot & apple muffins and banana flapjack
5. cleared bedroom and spare room ready for mum and dad coming next week
6. pasta bake for tea
7. watching xfactor ... love it/hate it but cant resist it0% credit card £1360 & 0% Car Loan £7500 ~ paid in full JAN 2020 = NOW DEBT FREE 🤗
House sale OCT 2022 = NOW MORTGAGE FREE 🤗
