I'm resurrecting this old thread to see if I can benefit from your wisdom once more.

As you can see all was well with the world and I got my new battery, the car was driven as normal and in the last month has done 3 350 mile round trips on top of the usual.

MOT test was due last Thursday and on that morning I got in the car to pop to the shops and it would not start. AA came out this time and declared the battery dead and alternator fine, all the same tests again and it was faulty. He didn't have a battery to sell me so he gave me a printout of his findings and jumped me so I could get my car to the garage. They tested the battery again, declared it faulty, more printouts replaced and gave me the old battery back to take it up with the co involved. My car then sailed through the MOT and it was serviced a few months back.

I am going to bring this up with the company and am clueless to why this is happening. I have never had problems like this before. Any advice on what the hell is going on would be much appreciated!

Incidentally my new battery definitely has a 3 year guarantee whilst the company I got the last battery from was very cagey about any guarantee when it failed.

Thanks in advance for your help :-)

If your battery has a guarantee they should just swap it. The battery should be guaranteed for at least 12 months. If it hasn't then I suggest it's second hand and the company who sold it to you know that.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

Thanks Olly300, I got the battery from a mobile fitting company and they replaced it last time but were very reluctant about it at first. I dread to think what hassle they give me when I go back to them. I can't see anything on their site about guarantees but I suppose it comes back to it being fit for purpose.

I think I will see if I can get it trickled charged (as has been suggested before) and then tested. If it fails again get it refunded and if it passes maybe see if I can sell it. I'm just so frustrated that this has happened again. I've replaced more batteries in the last year than I have in 16 years of driving!

two failed batteries in 4 months might be an indication of a charging fault

    Hi,
I spoke to the company that fitted it (a mobile service), the person I spoke to told me that it was impossible for the RAC or the AA to say that the battery had failed and would not hold a charge and that the only way to tell is to charge the battery for 24 hours and then see if it will hold a charge, yadda yadda. Does anyone know if this is true? It sounded rather suspect to me, the battery is 10 months old and the car has been driven normally in this time. Whatagain

We had a battery fail. The AA came out and tested it and gave us a paper to take to Halfords (two-years into three year warranty). Halford's tested the battery with a table top tester, verified what the AA has said (failed cell) and replaced it with absolutely no question. Further 3 year warranty too.

If you have had a new battery and the alternator is charging then you must have something discharging the battery when the car is not running.

Common culprits are boot or bonnet lights on because the switch has stuck closed or the interior light left on (which you may not notice as on some cars the light is on for a short while after you lock up). Could be other causes but they are the most common.
