What evidence do you have that speed cushions/pads are safe? Can you prove that they do not cause damage to the inner walls of tyres?

Can you prove all 46 were and not from pot holes and the likes?

Maybe you need to spell it out to me.

The part where there is enough clear evidence to link the road deaths so speed bumps. Speed bumps can cause tyre damage, can't pot holes and debris on roads?

It doesn't say how many blow outs were due to inner wall wear.

I was forces to spend £100 changing the geometry on a Lexus as everybody but the manufacturer seems aware that when set by the manufacturer they suffer from terrible inner tread wear.
Surely something like speed bumps would be a random selection of vehicles ,but some other cause would be displayed if the data from the 46 blow outs was examined ....
..Maybe you should contact the author of the article and prompt him to investigate further

To flip things, how do you consider speed humps to be safe? What evidence can you provide? What safety testing has been carried out on speed cushions/pads/humps?

I didn't say they were safe. I think you'd have more luck following up actual studies into things like changes in death rates due to increased response times of ambulances.

Yes - the difference being pot holes and debris on the carriageway are treated as safety issues by highways departments and dealt with.

    Yes, if driven over properly.

Still waiting for your explanation of 'properly' :D

So pot holes can cause damge to the inner edge of a tyre. Kind you weaknes your already thin evidence.

so when these cars go over a speed bump are we saying the inner wall scrapes across the edge of the speed bump?
because the way i see it at most it will cause feathering of the tread/edge of the tyre
the wheel is still going up over the bump rather than scraping along the edge
  • Any link to something that attributes 46 deaths to speed bumps yet?

Honestjohn has been banging on about the dangers of these speed humps for years. I think he is trying to get some research done.

“It’s highly likely. All drivers need to inspect the inner shoulders of their tyres for this sort of damage daily. At least 46 people were killed by tyre failures in 2007, many of which were caused by inner shoulder damage inflicted by speed cushions, and, since the number of speed cushions has risen hugely since 2007, it’s logical that the number of deaths caused by them must have also increased. I am trying to set up a proper test to establish how many speed cushions a car has to straddle before serious damage occurs to the inner shoulders of its tyres. Always drive over speed cushions one wheel over, one wheel on the road. Eventually this will break springs, but that is better than blowouts.”
