I was not aware that commenting was now seen as 'berating' on this site. If there was a better way of monitoring how much medication was left in an inhaler, perhaps this issue wouldn't arise. I have to alter how much medication I have depending on my peak flow results - hence the difficulty in keeping track.

I will not be expressing any further opinions on this thread.

I really cannot see how anyone cannot tell when an inhaler is coming to the end - it is so obvious.

If a drunk is brought in on Friday night with injuries caused in a fight they should ask for his/her credit card. If someone who is obese has to have surgery because of their weight they should have to pay.

No they should not - if they have paid national insurance all their working life then they should be treated. What about the people who need hip replacements who have put on weight because they are immobile and have had to wait so long for an operation that by the time it comes around they are overweight as a result of their problem? To refuse them would be very unfair. I notice everyone is having a go at smokers, drinkers and the overweight to discriminate against - if you are going to stop these people being treated then why not stop the sex change operations being performed free of charge on the NHS as well?

so raymond if i get hit tomorrow by some nutter through no fault of my own i should pay???
and why stop at obese people....lets ban alcoholics too ., or those who look the wrong way whilst crossing the road., or those who break limbs falling off horses( they get on them of their own free will.)..after all its their own fault ( i am being sarcastic by the way:D ) having worked in the nhs for over 20 years i pride myself that i would not show discrimination to anyone, after all there but the grace of god,

    Exactly - well said.

Over the years the NHS has provided myself and family with excellent life-saving care.

My dear Dad died of Leukemia, he had survived Kidney & Colon Cancer and had been a constant visitor to the Whittington Hospital for nearly 20 years. I must have my Dads genes because I too have received treatment for Breast Cancer and had more necessary operations than I can remember of the years................I am still here.

I have observed nasty rude behaviour towards staff, abuse of ambulance services and yes, overworked and sometimes sloppy staff.

Okay, I have had to clean the bed area ie, wash the floor because only one Domestic on a ward of 20.Unwrap those blasted cling film wrapped sandwiches that old folk just can't manage. Take food in - only because my Dad did not like fancy food - by that he meant anything that was not basic british fare.

Took in pillows because people steal them...........true.

In Clinic, people wafting in at 4.30 when their appointment was for 2pm and arguing that they have a right to be seen!

The ranting and ravings of the addicts wanting a methodone shot.

I have spent hours in Casualty. Go in with something minor you will wait but a true emergency gets seen.

I remember a New Years Day when I took my Dad in by car, he was very weak and I knew he was not long for this world. There was a queue at the Reception Desk. I waited in line and thought it a little odd that the reception area was very busy with "families". When I was near to the front of the queue I cottoned on that the women in the queue were all there purely for the "morning after" pill as the local pharmacies had run out................when I eventually got to the Receptionst (everyone had to Register) I was asked what the problem was, all I could say was my Dad was dying. That day I was angry!

The patients that go outside the building for a fag.....................oh I could go on and on but at the end of the day I am so grateful I am in England.

You can make a difference, contact your local hospital and join their Patient Panel, I feel as though I am making a positive contribution to making my hospital a better place.

I wasn't going to add to this thread but I changed my mind.

The last 2 years have been crap for hubby and I from a medical POV. August 2004 I had my first miscarriage, then had another one in March this year. Following pathology on the "products of conception" (as they call them) I have just been diagnosed with cervical cancer. I have to say that so far everyone I have had contact with, from receptionists to nurses to surgeons to consultants have been absolutely brilliantly excellent. I am having treatment on both the NHS and privately due to hubby's work making all employees members of BUPA, (they pay half, we pay half) who have been brilliant so far too. Some may ask why I don't have everything done privately to take at least one burden off the NHS. I asked my consultant the same thing and he said that I won't get seen any sooner privately for some things but for others like my MRI and possible surgery or radiotherapy in the future then I am doing those things privately rather than wait on the NHS. I have nothing but praise for the dedicated and supportive staff I have met so far.
I still can't get my head round the fact that these people are strangers to me but they are saving my life. Even before the consultant knew I had BUPA care I was diagnosed last Thursday 25th May, having an emergency MRI on Tuesday 30th (paid for by BUPA) being admitted to Addenbrookes on Sunday 4th June for more examinations to see how bad the cancer is (NHS) and hopefully any further treatments will be paid for by BUPA. Things are moving very quickly, our heads are still spinning.

I have nothing but praise for every person who works in a hospital because without them most of us wouldn't be here.

  • Good luck Shelly, and thanks for sticking up for the NHS. And thanks to everyone else who's stuck up for it. It's the people who 'swan off' at 5.30 who keep it going, as well as those in 'hands on' jobs. It isn't perfect, but what is?

Totally agree with Dora, SallyD and ts_aly2000. The staff who work for the NHS do the very best they can with what little they have and so far I can't fault them.

p.s thanks for the good wishes.
