Help! My meat smells like wet dog??!

Hi all,

I have a query. I'm browning off some mince to make cottage pie, and the mince smells like wet dog. I mean, really strongly of wet dog.

What has caused this? Is it safe to continue?

The farm shop has a faint odour of this, but I've never given it a second thought.

Thanks so much for your help,

A puzzled and nauseous PGxx

No-one can really tell you what to do because we're obviously not there to see and smell it.....so it's your shout in the end!

A few pointers to start though....

Have you used mince from this source before and how has it been stored?

How did it look and smell before you cooked it? Did you have any doubts then?

Is a lot of water coming out of it? if so and you evaporate this off by boiling hard, then start to actually fry the mince, how does it smell then?

If you believe it to be fresh, you could rinse it in water, drain and continue cooking it.
  • Ah Bronnie, good points!! No, I wish I could transmit the smell over the net...

I bought it from the local farm shop, he rears and butchers his own meat. I've used his meat before, both mince, stewing and steaks. I bought it on Thursday, and have kept it in the bottom of the fridge. It did appear more brown than dark red. There was very little water and almost no fat when I fried it.

    I'll try rinsing it.

    Thanks Bronnie!!

Are you sure it isn't dog? :D
If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

Personally, I would expect to use fresh butcher's mince within a day of buying or freeze it immediately.

The mincing process generates heat by friction , and obviously there are more cut surfaces on which the bacteria multiply, which causes mince to 'turn' quicker than other cuts. If it was a darker colour than normal.........? That said, give it a rinse and trust your nose and instincts. if you go ahead with it, cook it really well!!

The supermarket mince in sealed plastic containers does seem to last a little longer.....but that's no reason for buying it if you've got a good supplier and your mince which is low in fat and little water sounds like it's from quality cuts.

Sadly, most suppliers try to avoid waste, and he may have slipped in some that was just on the edge. Be a fussy and attentive shopper!

My mum used to be the fussiest of shoppers in the butchers....nothing other than top freshness got past her....we had no fridge and she couldn't afford waste.
  • hope you let us all know how it was - did you eat it?

about a month ago i was cooking mince beef, and the smell of it made me feel so sick, so i threw it out, woundnt even give it the dog. thought the butcher had given me bad meat.

Yesterday I started cooking some fresh mince from a different butcher and again the smell was ransid to me, I got my 11 year old daughter to smell it, she said smells ok mum, then in my gut I thought at that point I would never beable to put meat in my mouth again. .. the thought of meat dead flesh is turning my gut thinking about it,
I am just wondering if this has happened to any of you? I have always been a meat eater and not I just cant do it..
Is this what happeneds when people just go veggi?
    thanks
