 - think I'd 'hand-wash' for at least the first couple of washes, just in case :undecided.

Once you're really certain that the 'black bits' won't run, you could try putting them in with 'a pastel/pale wash'. Don't think I'd risk them in with 'whites only' - you just never know 100% ;).

Think this kind of situation is one of the reasons why I only ever buy plain white (or black) undies :D.
  • Hello I am hoping that someone can help advise me...my dds white school shirts are filthy at the cuffs. I don't know what she does to them but they're really very grey despite washing with bio powder and at 60. They are 65%polyester 35%cotton.

Any ideas? Can I soak them in a bleach solution?
  • I use glow white on my dd white polo shirts and that works well
  • I used to wet the cuffs and collars then get them on my wooden chopping board with a cloth underneath so I wouldn't slip & give them a good doing over on both sides with bar soap before bunging in the washing machine

:) This definately works on grimy areas like collars and cuffs; washers don't give these areas special attention, so a little extra before loading really makes the difference.

As to whether you can bleach these shirts, the care label should say yes or no to that. But bleach does weaken fabrics, so it's best not to make it part of your laundry routine if you can possibly avoid it.

Have you tried soaking with napisan? Xxx

Bar soap or fairy liquid might work never tried it on "grubbiness" (ODS is only 3!) but I know it works on berry stains and beetroot! :) xx

Agree bar soap or fairy liquid
Put 4 tablespoons of bicarb of soda in drum with whites
    Add your Ordinary laundry detergent
And glug of white vinegar in fab con drawer
But no fab con with it brings up whites lovely
My kids wore pale blue shirts but the eldest
Always had grubby collars so I scrubbed his

  • it's worth a go with the soap I just used what ever I had on hand in the house & you can see the grime coming out in the soap as you work it

totally agree - rub with soap.
My washing machine was in the garage so I kept a bar of cheap washing soap by the sink in there.
If in the kitchen, it may be easier to use whatever is there.
Or ask DD to rub some soap on from the bathroom before putting them in to wash.
  • I second using a bar of stain removed and rubbing it on and agitating the grubby areas.

One question I have is I currently use aldi almat laundry liquid which I want to continue using, however when I run out of fabric softener I would like to move to using white vinegar - how much should I use of this?
