Thanks for all the good tips will try a few of those over the next little while and see, hopefuly I'll get them up to scratch and then wash with a bio powder in future to keep them decent.

Quick update.
Tried a hot wash in the WM with bio powder and some brightenter sachet, Dr. Something, can't remember offhand.. Switched it off twice during the wash cycle so it sat to soak for an hour each time. Made a big difference, not perfect but a good improvement, so thanks to everyone who chipped in.
I'll do this occasionally to keep them nice.
Thanks

I swear by an overnight soaking in weak bleach solution followed by a hot wash and rinse and then leave on the washing line (if you have one) on a nice day - in fact I always wait for a sunny day to wash my whites as the sun is the best thing for getting rid of grubby whites!0

before I purchase an over priced box of d@z can anyone give me any tips on getting my whites to come up something resembling white?????
thanks in advance0 -
I throw in a tablespoon or two of that peroxide additive into a whites wash. I don't buy the Pink One advertised on telly, just whatever I can find in the pound shop.
My own opinion is that nearly all supermarket-bought brands of laundry detergent are pretty much alike, so don't consider it good value to buy one brand over another. Actually, I haven't bought any laundry detergent in a very long time as I make my own aka "gloop"0 -
Always use the hottest wash.0

You could try using soda crystals in your washing? A hot wash is always a good thing with whites. You could try soaking them in that stuff you soak cloth nappies in to remove stains?

Agree with all the above.
If you are talking tea towels, hankies etc. then nothing beats a soak followed by a boil wash (or as near to boiling as you can get)
For underwear, shirts etc, only ever wash with other whites.
If you think that's a waste for just underwear, then wash with soap in the shower when you are in there yourself!0 -
Completely agree with jackyann and QSquirrel about only washing 'whites with whites'.
Any of the 'Oxy-style Powders' work well for getting rid of any stain residues - could try working some of the powder into a paste and rubbing it into the stain before laundering.
The nappy-soaking stuff is another one that can really help - not as harsh as soaking in bleach.
Hottest possible water for whatever fabric your dealing with.
Most bras are marked 'hand-wash only' - have to admit though that I always machine-wash mine - at 30 or 40 - using a laundry bag to stop the hooks from sinking themselves into anything 'lacy' that might be in the drum at the same time.
Hanging whites on the line in bright daylight is another way of getting them whiter - even in winter, when you know that they won't possibly dry, the sunlight is the important thing.
Incidentally, for 'grease marks' - especially when it really shows up on plain coloured fabric - I always give a gentle rub with washing-up liquid before laundering. This has never failed to work for me.
