Buggy damaged on flight

Hi,

Just a quick question, basically I came home this eveing on a flight from Lanzarote. After the 4 hour flight I was ready to get my 19 month old son into his buggy only to find that it had been totally broken beyond use. It was brand new less than two weeks ago and looks as of it has been run over, it is snapped in half, the seat is tirn etc. I reported it and have the details of who to claim from. My question is the pram cost £80 so I will be asking for that but am I right in thinking I can ask for compensation for the inconvenience too? I had to carry my son back to an off Gatwick airport with two other children. I am now left with no buggy and and don't have the spare cash to just buy another. I have no idea what I will do without one as I do not drive. Can I ask for compensation for this too?

How will compensation change your situation? Have you or your child suffered any particular anguish over this?
    Gone ... or have I?

I think OP wants compensation not only for the damage of her pram, I think also for things like getting around, so maybe before she may have walked to get to most places, maybe now she will have to get the bus or even taxis.

My son is 19 months and I live in London so frequent reliable(ish) transport, but if my pram broke I really would be in quite a pickle with him for shopping and collecting my big son from school, as sons school is best part of an hour away with a bit of a walk, but at saying that I have 3 prams (a really cheapo one for holidays, an everyday lightweigt one, and his original big one from when he was first born) so hopefully will never find myself in that position.

Did you go alone with the kids?

Me personally, I wouldn't ask for compensation, but I'd expect them to cover the cost of a replacement buggy. Do you still have the receipt for it? If so, put a copy in of it with your claim and some pics of the damaged buggy.

This is why, when we go on holiday next summer, I'll be picking up a 2nd hand buggy from eBay just specifically for the holiday, so if it gets ruined or damaged, I won't be that bothered.

Did it cost you money to walk and carry the child (although i appreciate it may have been difficult).

Chasing money that you simply arent entitled is not good.

It will be difficult enough to get them to cough up for the cost of a new buggy. So it would be best to limit yourself to going after them for that, as you'd stand a much better chance of success.

I find it surprising that someone who can afford to fly to Lanzarote with 3 children can't afford a buggy for her child. Especially as she is likely to be re-imbursed the cost.

When you claim incude the receipt (or bank/card statement) and also make it clear you are stuck without a buggy and cannot afford to buy a replacement until the claim is processed. If possible see if you can submit the claim by phone, lots of companies do this now for things like car insurance.

  • Thank you for all your replies. I was not alone, I was with my parents (who incidentally paid for my holiday). I am unable to buy a new buggy as I do not have the money. I do not have a car and rely heavily on taking my son in his buggy to the shops and to play groups. I was simpy asking if they would compensate for the inconvenience caused as if the buggy had not been damaged beyond use I would have been able to put him in it and help take the luggage to the bus. I would also not be in a position now where I do not know how I am going to get out of the house to buy shopping etc. I will have to use taxis etc but simpy cannot afford the cost of this. It surpises me how a simple question can make some people reply with such rude answers. What difference does it make if I was able to afford a holiday but cannot afford a buggy now? Why does that have any bearing on the question I asked?

It's just that claiming for the buggy is going to be difficult. They will try to obfuscate as much as possible. Claiming for consequential loss is nigh on impossible.
  • Thank you, I am claiming from the airline so I will see what they offer me and take it from there. As long as I get the money for a new buggy that is the most important thing.
