URGENT Help re: ARGOS GAS COOKER

 Help anyone, I am so cross with Argos. Having just moved into a new flat we decided to purchase a new cooker as the old one was past it's sell by date and didn't fancy lugging it up 3 flights of stairs to the new flat.
So went onto Argos website and saw a cooker in our price range and point, made a note of the Item code and telephoned them up to place the order (They checked our address and said "oh no, due to new regulation as your living in a flat you cant have that one you need to select one that has a FSD ? (flame safe device)". So we go back onto the site and choose another one, telephone back and place the order.
Now roll on 1 months later, after calling 2 different gas safety certified engineers (And paying for them !) to try and install the cooker and failing both times, I finally called the manufacturer Hotpoint / Indesit who sent out a engineer. 5 mintues later the engineer was leaving our flat having seen strait away that the actual cooker that we ordered was for a Caravan LPD and not a normal gas cooker !!
"We should not of been sold this cooker as its for caravans and clearly your not living in a caravan !!"
Now Argos are refusing to exchange the cooker for the correct model, now as a consumer with a now useless cooker can anyone offer any advice ?
Please look on their website at the 2 different cookers and their product descriptions:
Wrong one: 477/1548
Correct one: 477/0491
No where in any of the product descriptions does it mention that one is for Caravan use ! I feel completely ripped off and out of pocket now by over 500 pounds !
Any advice

Are you sure this engineer was correct? Dixons also sell this cooker and specifically state that it can be used in flats. No mention that it's for a caravan on any of the sites I googled.0

It was a Hotpoint / Indesit engineer, it was a manufacturer engineer ! he was correct and even showed me the model specification on his laptop that is used for diagnostics.
He stressed that when we ordered it over the phone they sales person should of noticed the address was a flat (They did for the FSD device) and realised that there were 2 different models and we needed the Gas model and not the LPG.0 -
Who at Argos has refused to exchange? Are you sure the cooker you ordered is the one they sent?0

Yes am positive, I phones customer service and they basically said "Tough luck, its what you ordered" :mad:0

Then have you checked that the model number of the cooker you have is definitely HW170GIW?
According to applianceplanet.co.uk, the difference between HW170GIW
(http://www.applianceplanet.co.uk/eshop/manuprod/HW170GIW.htm)
and HW170GW (http://www.applianceplanet.co.uk/eshop/manuprod/HW170GW.htm) seems just to be that the GIW model has a catalytic self-cleaning liner. (Well worth paying for, by the way).
There are only three possibilities. Either you have a different cooker, or all these applicance stores have the wrong information for HW170GIW or the engineer was mistaken. What reasons did the other engineers give you for being unable to install? Surely they would have noticed and mentioned it if it was because it was a LPG cooker.0 -
I think you probably have a HW170LIW which is LPG. Check your version"The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts."

Thats correct, its the LPG version for Caravans.
That's a different cooker from the one referenced by the Argos product number you gave in your post. You said you ordered 477/1548.
I think your rights in this situation depend on whether you ordered the cooker with the Argos product number 477/1548 (in which case Argos delivered the wrong cooker and will have to replace), or you ordered Argos product number 477/1555 (in which case you probably can't require Argos to take it back although if you talk nicely to them maybe they will do it for customer relations.)Am on the phone being passed from Hotpoint to Argos as no one wants to take responsibility
Take a couple of minutes to consider the possibility that the responsibility may be yours.
Edit: Actually, I think I may be wrong about that. If you told Argos it was for a flat, they shouldn't have sold you the LPG model. Check your rights with Consumer Direct.0 -
Sorry but I can't agree with that, we placed the order over the telephone with the help of a sales assistant (The 1st cooker we decided to get they told us we couldn't as we live in a flat and need one with a FSD, hence they recommended the model that we purchased !!!), the two models are VERY similar: 477/1548 and 477/0491
If they actually provided a installation service we would of taken it ! but no, they didn't for this model so we have to get 2 x different GAS SAFETY engineers at our OWN cost to try and install it and when they couldn't that's when I contacted to the manufacturer who sent out their own engineers who immediately noticed it was a LPG !!
If we would of just placed the order via the website, then Yes I would take the blame, lesson learned, ebay it (Is it even possible to Ebay a cooker ??) but we didn't. We phoned the sales Line and on their advice we purchased the cooker as this was the model they recommended !!0 -
If you ordered 477/1548 which is clearly marked as an LPG Cooker its your fault.
If I ordered the wrong product I would expect them to charge me extra delivery to exchange it.
Maybe you could do a deal when you pay the difference + £30 or something?
If it comes from the same warehouse it isnt really an issue for Argos. Not Again0
