My lovely daughter decided to draw smilies on pillars in town, got caught on CCTV  She got a telling off from the police. Me and mr troo have decided to march her down to the city centre manager and she's going to offer to clean it off. I just hope they don't insist on hiring a specialist cleaning firm and give us the bill0 -
And can I come and watch Troo? I can bring DS with me and show him the consquences of certain actionsOrganised people are just too lazy to look for things

How many different things have you got in your cleaning bag? And water to rinse with? Cloths to dry and polish up?Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. I've got WD40, and mr troo has some solution (can't remember what it's called) that they use at work for cleaning marble flooring. I'm taking some old rags and water in a spray-bottle. I'm hoping they'll give us some cleaner or recommend one though, I'm terrified we'll end up taking the glaze off :eek:Bulletproof0

Can anyone help with a remedy for cleaning discolouration from a honed finish white marble fire surround. Unfortunately, the area immediately above the fire opening appears to have attracted a deposit from the gas fire beneath.
I have tried using just a damp cloth first with plain water, then with a small amount of washing-up liquid. No success I'm afraid. Would be very grateful for any ideas.Irene0 -
Hi
We have a thread on cleaning marble I'll link below which suggests trying a fireplace sales shop, and very much says NOT vinegar, which is otherwise a good old fashioned cleaner.
Perhaps someone will come along soon with more help on this.

To clean a polished marble, you need a specialised cleaning product. If not polished, sponge with a soapflake solution, then dry with a towel. If the marble is stained, sprinkle salt on the stain, and the salt should soak up some/all of the stain, and you can brush it off later. If this doesnt remove the stain after a few attempts, soak the salt in a little sour milk and leave for as long as you can. This should help remove the stain, if not, you would need a proffesional!!!0

Thank you for your contributions.
The finish on the surround is not polished, it is honed, which gives a smooth matt finish. So one of the fears of course is not to create a polished effect on a prominent section.
catowen, you suggested a soapflake solution. Do you have a recommendation as to which soapflake? As far as the salt is concerned, would you dampen the 'upright' surface before adding the salt crystals?Irene0
