    Thank you for your contributions.

The finish on the surround is not polished, it is honed, which gives a smooth matt finish. So one of the fears of course is not to create a polished effect on a prominent section.

catowen, you suggested a soapflake solution. Do you have a recommendation as to which soapflake? As far as the salt is concerned, would you dampen the 'upright' surface before adding the salt crystals?

Must admit, i use a weak solution of water and my normal washing powder, to clean my marble fireplace, i always dry it off straight away and it comes up fine.
If the stain is on the upright part (and washing hasnt helped) i think i would make a milk/salt paste and pat on, and would leave it for a good few hours. Have just read in my household hints book, that you can clean a marbled top table with diluted vinegar or lemon juice, and must be washed off quickly with warm water. Ive never tried this, would worry about not rinsing it off quick enough, but might be worth a try!!!
  • Thanks once again.
Will do some experiments on discrete areas. Will let you know how I get on.

Have you tried heating the area up with a hairdryer and then using a damp microfibre cloth? When warm the area should expand and any of the liquid from the candle trapped should come out.

How about using a scraper virtually flat at the level of the wax and scrape very gently. Oncwe the wax is removed perhaps use some silicone clear wax like you would use on shoes and buff it up!

The reply on this thread might help: candle stain - not wax?

  • I remember my gran getting wax or grease/oil out of clothing using brown paper and a hot iron.

    Worth a go.
Not in debt at the moment, but been there in the past and realise I'm the kind of person who could easily fall back into it with the self destructing spending button so making sure I keep on top of being a good girl.

I need some advice on how to clean a marble hearth please?
  • I use baby wipes on mine. The hearth is never really that dirty but I find the wipes do the job.
