    Hi,

I noticed today at Tescos in Allerton Rd Liverpool that Unleaded had come down , but, not Diesel. I asked the checkout lady who apologised but, did not know.

It is a big rip off, a few years ago it used to be considerably cheaper than Unleaded, now that a lot more cars use diesel efficiently, the price seems to have increased.

Be interesting if anyone gets a reply from ASDA , Tesco or MP.

Another thing that bothers me is ; Why is Petrol & Diesel still sold at "xx".9p per litre, price rises are always a whole penny?

    Cheers

    Terry
  • >:( i am a small independant petrol retailer and i would love to be able to buy petrol for what the supermarkets are selling it for. we make no profit at all from petrol. it is just a way of enticing people into the workshops. support yopur local petrol stations . you will all be sorry when we all go to the wall !!

Asda Superstore in Swindon have dropped deisel from 85.9p to 82.9p. Not as much as petrol but still 3p cheaper than our local Tesco.

There isn't any great conspiracy regarding the price difference between petrol and diesel in the UK.

Previous posts have said "diesel's gone down by 3p but not at much as petrol". Eh? The recent petrol price reduction WAS 3p.

The price differential between petrol and diesel is always higher in the winter, and lower in the summer. That's because diesel fuel and central heating fuel are the same basic thing (before additives are added) and there is more demand for central heating fuel in the winter (by a long way).

And the differential has increased, to some extent, because all the diesel now sold is ultra low sulphur diesel, which costs more to produce, rather than the "old" higher sulphur stuff.

If the price differential between diesel and petrol is something like 3p/litre (say 79.9p rather than 76.9p) that's just under 4%. So if a petrol car does (say) 40 mpg, and the diesel car does (say) 50 mpg, the diesel car is only 17% cheaper to run rather than the apparent 20%.

If the supermarkets choose to have a price war on petrol, rather than diesel, that's life. It is no different to them having a price war on baked beans rather than spaghetti hoops. Some people like to buy one; others prefer the other. Doesn't make it an anti-diesel conspiracy.
  • The best solution to the rip-off UK fuel prices is to bail out to a country that doesn't rip of its inhabitants.  I know plenty who have decided that the UK has long gone down the pan and left and that is my intention.

So, here I am reading this petrol/diesel string and nodding with agreement at each post - then I read the above. I get so angry with people who assume we are all in the fortunate position of being able to up sticks and live abroad. It's just not as simple as that. Some of us have to earn a living that is specific to our community and cannot be done by computer, most of us cannot 'commute' from France and the rest of us don't have the financial wherewithall to move. Please, please stop going on about living abroad my friend. :'(

Ah, I see now - Thanks for the technical advice re how Diesel's made ........ So those of us that have gone the Diesel route with our cars should perhaps consider simply use central heating fuel then if it's basically the same stuff ? I guess there's no duty on it, but then again no "dye" in it to detect ??? Do remind me someone how much Duty is in a Gallon (am I still allowed to say that or must I say in every 4.545 Litres ?????) and how much is basic cost .......... Food for thought perhaps. Hmmmm ......... ;););)
No reliance should be placed on the above.

Count yourself lucky you don't live in a town like mine where Tesco drove all the independent petrol stations out of existence by loss-leading their petrol prices. Our Asda doesn't sell petrol either. Now Tesco have no competition and always charge 2p or 3p more that the nationally claimed Tesco petrol price. I would count myself lucky to get my petrol for 80p nevermind the prices you guys are quoting. Support your independent garages before they are driven out of existence too.
  • And the differential has increased, to some extent, because all the diesel now sold is ultra low sulphur diesel, which costs more to produce, rather than the "old" higher sulphur stuff.

Two points, I've been buying diessel for a long time, low sulphur has been around for quite a while and the difference with petrol is increasing dramatically. I don't think that this has much to do with production costs, it is mostly a market decision.

They have chosen to do their price war on petrol rather than diesel. That is their right. It is our right to organise a backlash against that system - make the market work. As I say, first one to drop to petrol price gets my custom even if the others match the price.

ASDA has reduced its petrol price in all stores to 76.9p but Tesco has not. 2 local stores to me are still 79.9p and another is 80.8p. I have emailed Tesco to ask for an explanation.

They state they have a policy of being the cheapest in an area and nobody will offer cheaper prices within 3 miles of them. This really means that if they don't have an ASDA locally they will not offer the reduced price.

When ASDA announced their reduction Tesco were quick to jump in and say they would match the price. They didn't say it would be selective.

    Regards,
    Arthur.
  • In Newark there appears to be some sort of Cartel working as every petrol station in the town is still charging 86.9p per litre, they get away with it as there is no supermarket which is selling petrol, apart from that is Waitrose, who have francished the petrol buisness out. If you complain they allways quote that they have a local pricing policy that allows them to adjust the price whenever any of the other petrol stations adjust theirs, How convienient?

I was in Lincoln on Friday (15 Miles down the road) and the petrols stations there are all in competion due to all the supermarkets selling petrol, they have all got petrol at 76.9p. It's also the same in Mansfield. That's 10p per litre difference, of course in Old money that's 45p per gallon, I always fill up (in excess of 50litres every time), by my reckoning thats almost a fiver a tank difference.

    Now that's a rip off. >:( >:( >:( >:(

My advice to anyone that has to buy petrol in Newark, is to buy the bare minimum ammount, 2 litres I think, which should be enough to get you out of town to either Lincoln or Mansfield.
I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not sure!
