This strike is counterproductive and will only hasten the end of Royal Mail.
Which is a real shame.
In theory organisations like the NHS and Royal Mail could be fantastic, if they could just lose the wasteful and lazy public sector mentality.
I would love to see the efficiencies of private sector working practices used in taxpayer funded entities, but without the profit being skimmed off by private organisations.
The best of both worlds is possible, and indeed, vital if these organisations are to survive without being privatised. The country can no longer afford to write a blank cheque to public services.
Why don't these dinosaur unions realise that if they don't get their heads out of the 70's, their employing organisations are unsustainable?
Actually I think its the private sector that needs to get real. Royal Mail's problem is that the can't set their prices at a fair level - its just too cheap. Can you imagine being able to post items at royal mail prices via one of their private sector competitors (I think not). Effectively the tax payer is subsidising the private sector by providing cut price postal services.
Its the same with wages - some parts of the private sector pays so poorly that many people need top-ups to their wages from benifits just to live. This is effectively subsidising private sector pay.
This subsidy to industry needs to stop - we cant afford it any more, the private sector needs to pay its way.
Having said that, I dont agree with what the posties are doing - they are just shooting themselves in the foot.0 -

The people that pay us are always looking for an excuse to get out of it so this is a great excuse for them. "see that cheque that I was meant to get to you 2 months ago. Eh I cannot give you it because of the postal strike!"
The best workers (meaning the most dedicated) are those who never complain although they probably pull more then their own weight and would have the right to.
Over the decades unions, both here and in Europe, have certainly helped make the workplace safer and better, but unfortunately they have also been the sounding board for people's egos and union bosses are on a mission to pit theirs against the "oppressing capitalist exploiting etc. management etc."
Unions need reforming and modernising, just like the large corporations are trying to modernise themselves. The bitter truth is that there are more people of working age than there are jobs, and staging strikes in a vital service at a vital time (flu jab material is being held up), does not inspire sympathy. Roll on the thousands who are applying for postal jobs.Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.0 -

Apples and oranges. The Royal Mail delivers to almost every street in the land, every working day. You can't compare the economics of that to private couriers that drive miles between drops.0 -
I heard a postie on the Radio this morning saying...
"it's not like we work in a factory or summit, there ain't a bell that goes off at the end of the day, we have a job to do and we have to do it till it's finished"
Although, not today or tomorrow apparantly.
Everytime I read a comment like this I cant help but think "now there goes another person who has no understanding of what a postie does".Not Again0 -

Everytime I read a comment like this I can't help but think, "now there goes another person who cannot keep up with a thread, and who finds it's impossible to read and understand what's posted"
The only comment I made was
"Although, not today or tomorrow apparantly"...which is just pointing out the Irony of someone saying "we carry on till the job is done", on the day they are on strike.
I know it's hard, but do try and keep up !!!!'In nature, there are neither rewards nor punishments - there are Consequences.'0 -
