And that, really, says it all!

well what it shows is i admit to my mistakes and on occasion i have thanked certain posts by people like yourself who in the main it seems i disagree with. i am yet to see anyone in the opposing side of the argument ever admit they are wrong at all. i am yet to see people like yourself give a thanks to people on the opposing side of the argument to yourself. considering such a wide range of issues that are discussed it is impossible to not agree with the odd post be someone.

is it common place for companies to make people redundant just because they have had a couple of days off with the flu?

It's common to use absenteeism as part of the matrix.

It's also common to use specific skills.

2 days more sickness then everyone else - Tick.
Cannot use the Software programme properly as refused training, yet everyone else can - Tick.
On a written warning for refusing training essential to do ones job - tick.

    ......Oops, here's your PILON.

fair points of course but why are so many poeple all on the companies side? how about understanding why someone would be annoyed to be told you have to do overtime instead of being asked to do overtime. why doesnt anyone understand why a company should make it worth your while by paying an overtime rate? why not have a go at the company for being too tight to train you within normal hours?
no wonder companies can treat people how they like these days.

they arent stupid. as they are in the situation they can wiegh up what affect pulling a sicky may have. having 1 or 2 days off sick when you havent been off sick for a long time shouldnt land you in hot water. has it occurred to you they may not want to just put up with it. that is an option if the really dont want to put up with it. if you had also read my posts properly you will have seen that i have said the same as you daily mail readers. i have said they should just put up with it on this occasion. you conveniently neglect to mention that.

Daily mail reader! :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:You couldn't be more wrong.

Please take a step back from advising people on this forum.

I still can't see why 'so many people are on the company's side' when the company are paying overtime for 20 minutes work. So many people can see sense - and certainly wouldn't advise taking 2 days sick for this.

So you suggest that after they have taken the 2 days sick, when they return to work and the training is re-arranged that they then do it?

Training on the system which is a huge part of the OP's daily work would be classed as essential, and rearranged. The company have stated that the training cannot happen during the working day as it will cause massive disruption. The only way they are not going to do the training is to refuse. Refusing will result in disciplinary action.

You'd think they were being asked to go away unpaid for the weekend, not work, and be paid for 20 mins of a 40 min break! They aren't even having to go in early or leave late.

So you expect me to thank someone who's advising the OP to skive off, lie or be generally bolshy about a couple of hours' unpaid training - dream on!

have you ever been an employer?
Do you have even the merest comprehension of how much unpaid work salaried people do, unlike paid by the hours staff?
have you ever done the accounts for a company and tried to find a way of balancing the books in an economy like we are living in today? trust me 20 minutes here and there adds up, I know i did accounts and wages for long enough.

I would think they would have another opportunity to do the training (as it is hard to prove the sickness wasn't real ) BUT they would probably still have to do the training during their break, paid! In anycase, training sessions are sometimes split into sessions so it could be that the employee in question could attend another one.

So if they refused this time (or pulled another sickie)...hmmmm then, I would think, the disciplinary hearings will start rolling.

Not good advice all in all...
