a bit over the top dont you think? if they have a good attendance record a couple of days sick is no big deal. that is simply a way out of it if they really dont want to do it. although i guess the boss still wouldnt be too happy but its better than saying no i wont do it. of course that is quite odd but true. if you read my post properly you will have seen i did say that they should just put up with it.

    edit.
if they were to do this they should also make sure no-one at work has any idea that they arent up for the overtime otherwise they will put 2 and 2 together. i mean even work mates not just the boss.

Donna - your advice stinks. It may be no big deal to you - but your advice, as usual, could land the OP in hot water.
  • yes. skive. that'll solve the problem.

what happened to taking pride in what you do? how individuals behave can affect the success or failure of a business, and thus whether or not you get a bonus/made redundant etc.

An employee cannot have pride in their job if the employer treats staff like this.
I consider myself to be a male feminist. Is that allowed?

They are getting paid to do 20 minutes training as overtime - hardly the employer crime of the century.

i havent usually put up with it in the past though and i guess that is part of why i am out of work.

And that, really, says it all!

Why are you moaning about 20 minutes?

Presumably you won't be able to do the work without this training so it is essential.

Only in bl00dy Britain would people moan about so little! Tell you what - jack your job in and give it to someone who really wants one!

    "Overtime pay

There's no legal right to pay for working extra hours, and there are no minimum statutory levels of overtime pay, although your average pay rate must not fall below the National Minimum Wage. Your contract of employment should include details of overtime pay rates and how they are worked out.
Overtime rates vary from employer to employer, some will pay extra for working weekends or Bank Holidays, and others won't."

    From Direct Gov

To clear up any mistunderstanding: an employer does not have to pay for overtime, a basic or enhanced rate as long as the total pay and hours mean you are not working for below the NMW.

Assuming that someone is below the NMW by working 10 hours unpaid is very presumptuous as you have no idea what they do for a living, so how much they are being paid.

they arent stupid. as they are in the situation they can wiegh up what affect pulling a sicky may have. having 1 or 2 days off sick when you havent been off sick for a long time shouldnt land you in hot water. has it occurred to you they may not want to just put up with it. that is an option if the really dont want to put up with it. if you had also read my posts properly you will have seen that i have said the same as you daily mail readers. i have said they should just put up with it on this occasion. you conveniently neglect to mention that.

is it common place for companies to make people redundant just because they have had a couple of days off with the flu?
