Asda offer is great for us blindeys. For people with better eyesight, they are comparable with elsewhere.

For anyone who wants thin and light lenses Asda, it's still much better than the rest isnt it?
    tesco - rubbish frames (£15) + thin and light (£60) = £75
    spec savers - rubbish frames (£25) + thin and light (£30) = £55
    - designer (£75) + 2 thin and lights (£30) = £135 for 2

Does anything beat (or come close if only wanting one) to Asda, or is it suggested that people with good eyes dont need thin lenses as they are pretty thin already?

Went back to Asda today and was told that my prescription definitely did not cover the range of lenses that they were able to dispense under their advertised offer of 2 pairs for £90. The boffins at Head Office had been asked if the prescription could be met at the offer price, but nobody had yet made a decision and it might be a month before they did so,

Do you mind me asking why you weren't able to get the lenses? My prescription is very strong ( higher than anyones I seen posted on here:cry: ) I now i'm wondering if I'll be to get some too?
Life's too short for wasting on ifs and might have beens...........

Why don't you ring your local Asda optician? I rang the Watford branch before I went and they were very helpful and explained what I could have.
  • I was told that my near (reading) prescription was strong and I had a large correction for astigmatism. My numbers are above on page 9. Still no call far less an apology from Asda explaining why some prescriptions cannot be met. I do not seem to have such a strong prescription as others on this site. Find it amazing there is no service department for optical queries to whom you can complain and/or ask questions.
  • Haven't looked through the whole thread yet. But does anyone know what prescriptions are or are not included under the offer?

So yes someone does come close! Spec Savers at £55 vs Asda £50 - not the end of the world compared to the expensive High St lot!

[2] The £25 spec are not rubbish frames - I've got some! If you want the higher design spec then there's the £75 choices as Ian says would be £67.50 each - if you have two. Again, not do far away.

[3] I've done some home work on the high index business (the numbers like 1.5, 1.74 ect). basically the higher the number the more "thinning" the lens is. So for all you "bats" you'd have bottle goggles at the normal 1.5 but you get them thinned with 1.7 index. In answer to Ian about "normal" people, YES they get "normal" lenses (1.5) which don't cost extra.

[4] And this is what amazes me most! Everyone's excited about the Asda pricing but they've given up the bottom price for most people (who have regular thickness lenses) to Specsavers - who kick !!! at £25, or two for £75 (£37.50 each) or £85 (with bendy back arms) (£42.50 each)

    So who's the money saver?

No-one claims they are the best for normal to mild shortsightedness, but it IS brilliant for all us "Bats" who do need the thinner lenses where the saving can be £150 (more for some) ~ Good Moneysaving Wouldnt You Say ? You are obviously lucky enough to be "normal" which is great for you as you have more choice, but I personally have saved a fortune and believe me I have looked :p

It's worth noting some of the designer ones at specsavers cost £125 (£92.5each) compared with £45 each at asda.

But my main question is if you are on a mild perscription and don't really care about brands but want a pair that look good, is it best to go for this and get thin lenses or is it not noticable on a low perscription?

    right -1.5
    left -1.5 +0.25 125

That's disappointing - I read somewhere else on this thread that they were able to meet prescriptions between -20 and +20. If I'm not mistaken you say that your astigmatism is -0.5 which I wouldn't say is strong at all; I'm -5 and anything over -3 is considered 'extreme', although I only require single vision lenses. I haven't had a call back from Asda to say that my glasses are ready yet so I'm a little concerned that they may say I'm too strong as well... watch this space!

And thanks Ginger J for reminding me about the bat voucher - completely forgot about it in the excitement of getting 2 pairs for £90, so hopefully they can apply it retrospectively!
