:confused:does anyone know if they have to be frozen first??
There is a train of thought amongst some barfers that all raw meat has to frozen first - best you do your own research( via barf sites or books) and decide what you think is best for you and yours.

With my dogs, usually freeze first because I have got in bulk. However the chicken wings off the Sunday chicken are fresh and could be around 4/5 days old from slaughter to eating (local shop)With raw meaty bones( beef ribs) I even give them frozen - really gives the teeth, jaws and gums a work out.

Cats may find that too much but then I dont have a cat so dont know

Thank you so much for replying! I thought I was going to get ignored again for a minute! lol

    thank you :)

Sorry I didn't reply when I first saw it. TBH, I'm exploited Fire Fox's nutrition skills and research ...particularly as it sounds as if her cat has similar considerations as one of mine. :)

Mine also eat a lot of ''self sourced raw'' i.e. they hunt...... a lot. We are always reasonably careful with poultry feeing as we have chickens, and don't want to encourage hunting of them, espcially when we have chicks about! But recently a dog..someone else's...... came in andcaught a hen, leading to its death :( and that I prepared for the animals. If we didn't keep poutlry I'd let them have it feathers an all...:o. Luckily our cats show very little interest in catching birds at all, but they get a lot of rodents/rabbits etc.

    well done :j

you will have to let me know how big it is and how long it lasts :D

Apparently it's 3.2kg which is equivalent to 32 x 100g pouches or 38 x 85g pouches; a poster on another thread says she normally buys £20 (inc. delivery) worth of meat for two cats for a month. Even buying ready-made doesn't seem like it's going to be any more expensive that what we normally feed, if you can supplement with freebies from a butcher it could end up very MSE. :money:

Sorry I managed to miss three posts on page one, including your query. :o My answer I don't see why freezing is essential as it doesn't kill bacteria just holds them in suspended animation. But you do need to feed super-fresh which means freezing any spare meat. The ready-made raw cat food is delivered frozen as a lot of it is minced - mince has a much larger surface area so will go off quicker than lumps of meat.

Fire fox, please do let us know how you get on with it. If it works for Noah it sounds as if it would be worth me trying with Pink Whistley.

    sounds good so far!

i was trying to work out how much space it would take up in the freezer
"I am an insomniac, so I was really excited when I was able to get a full night's sleep. I said to a friend, 'Just keep your fingers crossed that I get lucky again tonight!' Realizing what I said, I tried to correct it and said, 'No, I mean, I just hope that I get some tonight!' After that, I decided to shut up."

Kimberley said on another thread that she raw feeds her two with food4Cats stuff at a cost of £10 per month each. I have heard of some raw feeders saying theirs don't like the texture of frozen minced stuff tho.

Another half a chicken wing devoured over thirty five minutes this afternoon. Noah did the same 'kidnap' trick from the usual feeding spot to another part of the room, and from there another two attempts made to contaminate my rug.

Don't know if he feels he needs more privacy?? I don't mind raw chicken goo in one area but not keen on him spreading it about so much. I'm worried he'll end up under my solid wood kingsize bed and I won't be able to rescue the remains!! There must be a behavioural/ instinct reason?

  • Of course Noah needs more privacy: you've given him such a marvellous delicacy he's not taking any chances that it will be taken off him. Bless

:rotfl: The strange thing is that the rug isn't any more private than his feeding area - the kitchen and living room are open plan. The first time he went on the rug I went after him, expecting him to hiss or growl but he just let me have the wing. I thought it might be comfort (he likes to wash sat on the rug) but today when he ran off he stopped right in front of the sofa on the laminate, instead of going round the end where there is a large private 'corner'. He doesn't run off straight away either, he is happy for a bit and then scoots off.

That's because Noah is a very good boy for his beloved Meowmie. Next time he might take your hand off now that he's had a taste of real food
