What's with the teen boys? They can't communicate. What happened to their schooling?

I'll tell you what happened, nobody corrects grammar any more and nobody teaches children how to enunciate, nowadays if you speak properly you are considered a snob.

That's not schooling, its parenting/society. Its sitting with them at the table talking about what they are eating, its fingerpainting or fuzzy felting to be creative and talk about their ''art'' and what it means, its about not just pushing them in a pushchair but stopping to point at things, talk to them...learn letters, so that school can take little communicators and teach them grammar.

And I know its rich, as I'm not a parent, but I had people who did this with me, I did it with my nieces, and i long to do these things with a child. Maybe its envy that I can't produce one, which we'd feed house and educate ourselves, while others can produce so many...which I feed, house and (sort of) educate:rolleyes:. Feeling very right of centre tonight I guess.

Yes, you can even get degrees these days without using proper grammar, it's a joke.

Absolutely agree with this and I am a parent of 2 kids (would have liked another but I have to WORK to pay for my kids to have a good standard of living and having another would have made childcare impossible)

Another problem with the underclasses as we have delightfully named them, have hundreds of kids (slight exaggeration I accept) then do naff all with them, I'm not a perfect mother by any stretch of the imagination but I had my kids because I wanted them and didn't expect the school to be responsible for how they turn out or the taxpayer to pay for their upbringing.

The vocabulary sported by the teenagers on this programme is shocking, and I don't mean expletives, just their poor english full stop, but then I guess they bunked off school for most of their youth anyway and parents don't speak much better

I worked for an exam board a few years ago and they were debating whether text language was admissible in exam answers. It was decided that it was, as there is legally no requirement for kids to use correct grammar or spelling providing the meaning is clear, they can therefore use any variant of english they see fit and it is up to the examiner to prove what they have written is wrong.

As text language is "understood" the exam board could be open to a legal challenge for not marking it.

They don't though, I was fighting a losing battle at school, my son would come home using incorrect grammar and I would correct it and next day he was hearing it all again, even the teachers say was you and them things, it drives me crazy, all the hard work I put in and school and peers stole it away from my child in a society that won't let teachers correct children, and even worse teachers who can't speak properly themselves.

since my ''difficulties'' I have felt rather different about spelling, though believe it or not I do try most of the time. I have fallen bck on the old ''Will Shakespeare spelt his name in ten different ways''. But grammar can and DOES change meaning, significantly.

But its not just spelling or grammar, its more intrincic personal qualities, like kindness, repsonsibilty for self and those around you. e.g. the dog on the programme: the mother won't move to somewhere dogs aren't allowed but the kids won't pick up the dog poo. They WANT a dog. They do NOT WANT the responsibility.
  • Oh and another thing, my son said I was dissin' his mates when I corrected him !!!!!!!!!!!!!
