Deep Fat Fryer Help Needed
Comments

Hi Triticale
As this is a discussion about why people no longer use deep fat fryers it may be better placed in the Arms. Alternatively I can merge it with this thread which discusses deep fat fryers
Sure let me know which you prefer:A
My Mum never had one our whole childhood - well, that's a fib. We had home made chips as a kid but then she went on a diet and lost 11 stone and the deep fat fryer was binned! as was the frying pan!
I've never owned one myself - i do heart home made chips which have been fried, but let's face it, you can do as nice ones in the oven. I have made onion rings in a frying pan . I oven bake bahjis and if i was making battered fish would shallow fry it.
I have borrowed my neighbours a few times but to be honest I just feel sick after using it as I'm just not used to it! I guess i can't miss what I don't really know!
ZipA little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men

I have one that has sat on top of a kitchen cupboard for years collecting dust.
I have just got one of those 3.5kg bags of doughnut and scone mix so may have to dig it out and have a go at doughnuts.
Can anyone suggest the best type of oil to buy please? (not brand but type).
Ta.
you need an oil which is flavourless in itself - I like sunflower oil but rapeseed oil would also be good. you COULD try a supermarket own brand vegetable oil - but the flavour does vary depending on the supermarket. MOST of them are quite bland though. and cheap!
corn oil has a DISTINCT flavour so wouldnt recomend that.0 -

Thanks very much, I shall try the Sunflower oil first.0 -
I have a really tiny one that holds just a handful of chips. I brought it to make popadoms in and to make the odd chip butty.
For me, if it was bigger I would be tempted to eat more chips do this works for me

I paid £20 for mine... and it's saved us a fortune!!!
How many times do you fancy something bad for you and you resort to the takeaway????
We did about twice a month!!! That's £30 a month!!!
We've had maybe 2 takeaways since I bought mine over 6 months ago!!!!
Anyway, takeaways you end up with soggy chips!!
To make non-greasy chips you use the oil at HOT temperature... to seal them!
After a few minutes take them out and let the oil get back to temperature... then stick them back in 3/4 minutes before you want to serve them.... 2 cooks makes them crispier!
We then put them in a bowl lines with kitchen roll and sprinkle HM chip salt on them (salt, paprika, onion salt.... we're thinking of adding garlic salt too) and jump the bowl to evenly spread the salt, and remove grease on the kitchen roll!!
Works EVERY time!
Ps. We only use ours 2/3 times a month normally!!We spend money we don't have, on things that we don't need, to impress people we don't like. I don't and I'm happy! Mortgage Free Wannabe :dance:Overpayments Made: £5400 - Interest Saved: £11,550 - Months Saved: 240 -
I bought a cheap tiny deep fryer from Aldi the other day. I broke it in tonight by cooking tofu in it, which actually makes it quite tasty! I bought it for making samosas and spring rolls and I think I'll have a go at doughnuts too (all things I've wanted to make but I'm too scared to put that much oil on the hob), but what other things are nice to deep fry?
Dieters, stay away from this thread!0 -
Cheese (as in Italian resturants). Mozerella balls in breadcrumbs. Also, if you can manage it ice cream in batter. Need to flash fry though to stop the ice cream inside the batter melting too much.0
