You own the shares, I dont think anyone can take that away from you and place claim to it with charges or whatever just because you were absentee
I dont know the timescale really, they just have to process your id documents I guess so less then 5 weeks.
SL is about to go ex dividend next wednesday, its like 7p per share I think. The shareprice will probably fall in line anyway and relatively they have done ok just recently but still 30p below 2006 IPO price due to market strife0 -
Many thanks sabretoothtigger
I am eagerly awaiting the documentation from Standard Life. Once the process is complete I will post on here for any future people in the same position as myself. This windfall could not have come at a better time for me. lets hope the share price does not go down as a result of the interim profits announcemennt at 11am this weds
thanks again

For £10 of your £100 entitelment that you never even knew you had? Go on...
Despite the Georgeson-apologist's post above, 15% (which is what they're not tryng to scam off people who don't know any better) is DISGUSTINGLY HIGH for what they're actually doing. It's just exploiting people who don't know any better/assume it's Standard Life themselves they're dealing with.
The shares are your property. There is no reason whatsoever to pay some company to "get them for you". From the recipients perspective, they've done NOTHING except tip you off- you have NO RELATION to this company, and NO LIABILITY TO THEM WHATSOEVER.
DO NOT PAY THEM A PENNY.

Received a letter from Georgeson today regarding some unclaimed SL shares I had (which I was unaware of, although I had a pension with them some time ago).
Having read through all the (sensible and factual) posts in this thread and having done my own research I have no doubt it Gerogeson is a legit company, although I will go directly to SL to claim my own shares.
As far as the above poster referring the service as a 'scam' and 'exploiting people' I think that's a bit harsh. As someone else had pointed out you would have to pay a charge in brokerage fees should you decide to sell them anyway and I hardly think that could be referred to as a 'scam'!
It's very easy to critise any offer like this (where they are taking a cut) however it's no more illegal or morally 'disgusting' than the firms levying a fee for reclaiming (geniunely reclaim-able) bank charges. The fact that visitors to this site are obviously the type of people who have the time/resources to do their own dirty work does not make Georgeson's offer unattractive for everyone. I know if my parents received this sort of offer they would happily pay 10% to avoid the hassle of jumping through SL's hoops. Please don't assume everyone in the UK is as savvy as the users of MSE!
I see there was no response from seenthelight about the process so I will post up info once I get the ball rolling...And I'll see you/ And you'll see me/ And I'll see you in the branches that blow/ In the breeze/ I'll see you in the trees/ Under the sycamore trees0 -
Just a quick update for anyone in the same position...
Called Standard Life Shareholder's dept. (who's number has changed to (0845) 2753000 or (020) 3 367 8224 if you're calling from abroad).
You'll need to pass their security questions so it would be worth having as much info as possible to hand before calling them. They asked me for my full name, the last address they would have registered for me, my DOB and my National Insurance number. Obviously they might ask you different things but try and at least have these in front of your when you call.
They'll then tell you that they'll need to send out some forms to you for you to properly register the shares with your current address. However before they can do this you need to inform them if you wish the shares to be held with SL's own 'share account' or if you want the share certificate to be sent to you directly. Unfortunatley you can't go any further without doing this as which option you choose will depend which registration form they send you.
Now I'm no Gordon Gekko so if any of the following info is wrong (either because SL have mislead me or I've misunderstood it ) PLEASE correct me!
The difference between the two options is:
SL Share Account:
* Your shares are held , in your name, by SL who send you out a Welcome Pack and details of how to view your details on-line etc.
* Your details are not placed on any public register
However
* If you wish to sell your share you have to do it via SL's brokers.
Share certification:
* The share certificate is sent to you directly for you to keep.
* You can sell your share through any broker
However
* Your details are put on the public share register.
You can transfer your shares from one system to the other but there is an administration charge of £12 to do this.
I opted to get the certification form as I wanted to start the ball rolling. Once I've taken some advice from family memebers who know a lot more about this than me then I can always request the other forms and they'll just be a delay to me getting fully registered...
Until you are fully registered they will also be unable to confirm what the dividend payments owing to you are.
I'll update this thread once I'm registered...And I'll see you/ And you'll see me/ And I'll see you in the branches that blow/ In the breeze/ I'll see you in the trees/ Under the sycamore trees0 -
Hello,
I'm not sure if this is the correct forum but hopefully it is!
Yesterday I received a letter from Georgeson shareholder about an apparent unclaimed investment listed in my full name at an address in London. The letter went on to say they were attempting to find this person to have the funds allocated and so on. I have never lived in London, so in short I'm not the person they are looking for so they must be spamming every person they can find with my name.
My worry is....
Having googled the company in question their address and contact details do not match the details on the letter I received. Having rang the correct telephone number listed on the company’s page they say they have no office matching the letter I received. When I rang the 0800 listed on the letter yesterday is didn’t connect as if it wasn't a real number however it works today!
Is someone trying to do something funny with my identity?
The company details on the letter are as follows;
Georgeson shareholder
po1286
Bristol
bs99 2ff
0800 4080093
Contact Claire Caddick
Regards
Martin.
Interesting that this forum came out of my enquiry for Georgeson shareholder. whilst clearing my late mother's affairs I came across a letter and wrote thinking that she may have had shares elsewhere. The letter from Nov 09 was returned from a Bishopgate address as unknown by the Post Office. Thank you for raising this.0 -
Sorry to revive an old thread but I received a letter today 12 th Feb 2010 from Georgeson shareholder asking if I knew the whereabouts of my daughter and giving a partial address that she used to live 5 years ago.
The only thing we can think of is that she used to work in a Stakis Hotel over 5 years ago and it might be about that. Who, other than Georgeson shareholder, could she contact to see if it is about when she worked for Stakis Hotels?
Thanks Jennifer0 -

Hi Jennifer,
I stumbled across this thread looking for some info on Georgeson and might be able to offer you some help
I had shares in Stakis years and years ago and in 2000 they were bought by Ladbrokes, which rebranded itself as Hilton Group plc. in 2005 they then sold the hotels part of the business to Hilton Hotels Corporation and went back to being Ladbrokes plc (all very confusing).
During that time I moved house and lost track of who my shares were with. Unfortunately I have also lost my documentation of the original shares. It actually completely slipped my mind until I received a letter for Georgeson. It would appear that somewhere along the line, Georgeson have been employed to help locate folk like me, which makes me think there is a chance if your daughter was ever given any Stakis shares as a staff bonus or something similar, that she might be in the same boat.
I'm now trying to figure out how best to go about looking into this as Hilton Hotels Corporation, being based in the US are proving difficult to deal with, particularly with my lack of share information. I may end up going through Georgeson if I can't get any further on my own.
incidently, if anyone has any advice on how I can locate information on my shareholder details it would be appreciated.0 -
hi i was just wondering if anyone knows the contact details for bradford and bingley as my dad has recieved one of these letters this morning and im tryin to help him claim his money and this georgeson company are saying they have automatically already sold his b&b shares years ago x0

I too received a letter yesterday from this company. Like others I thought it might be some sort of scam.
Its interesting finding other people thinking the same things. Perhaps Georgesons should look at how they contact folk if it is giving this level of anxiety whereby creating such a thread and investigation into who they are.
Perhaps if they put a leaflet in with their letter explaining who they are and their background with some references may just allay so may fears?
I was going to bin the letter, I think I know which shares they are on about with myself, funny thing was I was going to do something about digging them out this week, co-incidence, but I'll now contact them to see what they want.
Thank you to the originator of this thread and to the contributors, you have just saved me some money... :-)0
