Is is just me , everytime I read expat forums ,or even mse , or certain newspapers , they all cite the number one reason why folk want to leave , or have already left the uk is because of immigration....do they not see the irony?
I notice that within the sentiment is those that are over in spain claiming benefits , bending the local laws and even our own to be able to live there. What is the biggest pet hate of them , those conning the benefits system and popping out kids when they are kids.
The next big personal moan is the amount of money they recieve for their pensions and benefits not paying thier bills because of the devaluation of the quid v euro...theres even a few cases going to court to demand more benefits.
My point here is then why not lock the door equally to economical immigration and emmigration alike?
Let hmg decide to stick two fingers up at eu legislation on exporting benefits out with its borders...note i do not see any of the other eu countries applying benefits outside their borders , assuming that they actually give any in the first place.
thoughts?

The drain on foreign health services bearing mind most of those going abroad are creaking, old and riddled with cancer.0

There's been a few documentaries in the last few months about people going to live in Spain, and retaining their DLA benefits. There's been quite a few threads on here too with people living in Spain getting their benefits asking advice on doctors and such.0

To play devils advocate they are likely complaining about low skill immigrants from 3rd world hell holes with little in common with our culture, thats a bit different from a wealthy old couple buying a villa in spain and paying tourist prices.
One kneecaps the pay of the poorest and causes many social problems, the other is a revenue opportunity for the locals. There's a reason its a lot easier for millionaire's to emigrate.0 -
I've heard (read in the papers) that if somebody comes here from the EU, they can claim all the family benefits for their families who are still in their originating country.
All this cross border stuff is mad.0 -

I presume the sort of money they get from Gordon's fight against "child poverty" seems vast to them and I expect it goes a long way over there.0 -
The theory of the EU is that in a common market, if you make better widgets in Germany you can sell them to Spain who can sell Germany their higher quality ham. The same principle applies if you have high unemployment and low wages in one country in a particular sector and a skills shortage in another - people move to fill the gaps (plumbers in the UK being apocryphically cheaper as a result). Some people will do that by getting a job before they move but realistically it's often easier to move first and then find something - and often the main wage-earner will move ahead first. So you're allowed to take job-seeking benefits with you for up to three months from your own country. Pretty good if you're moving from Sweden or Germany, not so good if you're coming from Central Europe as their benefit rates are lower.
These benefits running out after such a short period surely means that EU migrants will be more motivated than stay-at-homes to get a job in their new community and in time bring their families with them.0 -
