Try cycling to work if you live reasonably close, that's an easy way to get a bit more exercise without really trying.

The most important thing is what and how much you eat. I used to say that I ate all the "right" foods, but when I analysed it a bit more I realised that my portions were way too big. For example cereal - I used to fill a cereal bowl 2/3rds full, but when I weighed out the 40 gram portion recommended on the box I realised I was eating a double portion !

Do you use skimmed milk and low-fat spread (olive oil is best). Fresh salad and veg without butter/dressing/sauces ?

PS lose it now before you hit 40 - the older you get, the more difficult it becomes.

Portion size depends a lot on your size and your muscle mass, for me the recommended portions are abysmally small, i normally have 100g of porrage oats. You have to become attuned to what your body needs.

I use 1% milk, it tastes like normal milk and is near identical cal to skimmed milk (And is 8 pints for £2 in sainsburys). Rapseed oil is healthier than olive oil, has a higher burning point (less chance of carcinogens) and tastes better imo.

the only reason it gets harder as you get older is that most of us sit on bum all day slowly loosing muscle mass, most people even in there 60s who took up a sensible resistance exercise program could increase there BMR by 30%+ over a year

I've just run my average meals through a calorie counter app, and it looks like I eat around 2,100 per day - is this too much? I am male, aged 32 if that helps....
I'd say that's not far off the mark.

    Thanks all.

So - Protein foods are the main focus. Other than Eggs & Cheese, what are the best ones to incorporate into a daily diet? Remember - no nuts or caffeine :-)

the ones you enjoy, theres a huge list

i go for chicken, steak, lamb, pork, turkey, tuna, salmon, cod, kangaroo (the leanest protein), soya beans, live greek yoghurt and for breakfast I use a protein milk shake over my low GI cereal for breakfast as its a cheap way of getting protein and i dont fancy a lot of meat for breakfast

Im the type of person if I tell myself im on a diet im hungry and thinking about food all day, so the first thing I do is tell myself im not on a diet and play it by ear and that way I dont feel restricted.

I found that cutting out white bread, pasta and rice made the world of difference, it was like atkins without the dodgy amounts of fats etc, I started to eat more chicken breast, tuna, eggs (eggs are fantastic as you can make allsorts of snacks and meals with them) I still had potatoes but they would be boiled or baked, no chips, pizza etc. Still had cheese but went easy on my intake, had cream in my coffee instead of milk as milk tended to not agree with me, if I wanted a sweet treat id have some sugar free jelly with a dollop of cream, and if I had something bad for me like a piece of cake then so be it, I made sure I didnt deny myself but because I was eating so well I didnt feel the need to binge eat or eat naughty foods that often, my sweet tooth desitized I think!

I also noticed how much more energy I had and didnt feel sluggish so can really help in that sense too

Anyways I did this over the summer and lost 2 stone, im pregnant now so have had to change my diet, but definately when the baby is born il be back to the no bread rule!

the thing about losing weight and keeping it off is you have to find something you can stick to for the rest of your life which is why faddy diets are never the wy to go

its all about what works for you, its no good say cutting out every bit of junk completely if that doesnt work for you (i know it doesnt do for me which is why i havnt done that)

OP find what works for you and stick to it

personally i could never cut out bread completely

I never suggested a faddy diet, I personally cut out bread as it doesnt agree with me, it makes me bloated and my tummy hurts, I think you'll find thats the case with alot of people and thats why I suggested cutting it out, its not a fad diet and very easy to follow for the rest of your life, and I also specifically said I dont deny myself anything either, but cutting out the food suggested and eating more protien has led to me craving sweet foods less as I know I have a sweet tooth, did you actually read my post?!
  • I dunno about the excercise side of things, but I can vouch that slimming world does work, it's not a fad, it's a healthy eating plan for life and if done properly you dont ever have to feel hungry!
