Did find it interesting because I do quite a bit of online gambling, as I know more and more people are doing now, and I was wondering at what point do earnings from gambling become something any agencies need to be aware of? I mean, is it at the point of you having your online gambling account credited with winnings? Or at the point you withdraw to a bank account? Or am I reading too much into it?! :cool:We cannot change anything unless we accept it. Condemnation does not liberate, it oppresses. Carl Jung

Well actually don't get me started! 3 times in the last few weeks I've had accusations of the sort 'yeah its alright for you, with your nice big house and shiny 4x4' ??? :rotfl:

The tax office might not have a point where they would determine gambling to be a form of income by employment afaik. Butalthough there's no tax on the winnings there can be on the income I think, where appearnace or entry money is paid or gifted in return for the gambler entering - the benefits people would probably see allof it as income though, way before the tax though, otherwise there would be a double standard where one person was winning an average of £25 a week and keeping their benefit whilst anopther person was working for £15 a week and losing some of their benefit.0 -

I am a single parent in Scotland and was in reciept of income support for my 2 children.
I play poker online and was lucky enough to qualify for a televised final last year and was 2nd for $100,000. about £60k.
I stopped claiming housing benefit but didnt change the income support/child tax credit as i thought i was still entitled to this as some of it is child benefit which everyone is entitled too and i still wasnt working and as far as i was aware earnings from gambling are tax free in the UK.
I intended to just use the money as a bankroll to keep playing poker.
Today i got a letter saying i had to attend a interview under caution as they suspect a criminal offence may have took place in relation to undeclared capital.
So i am unsure what will happen now and would appreciate any advice.
many thanks
marky
You should have notified both the tax credit and Income support departments, (the money you got took you over the threshold) and there is probably an overpayment of benefits now.
They probably won't prosecute, but you will have to pay it back.
It may be tax free, but any income or savings, however obtained, can always affect means tested benefits, such as tax credits and income support.
£60k certainly does!
LinYou can tell a lot about a woman by her hands..........for instance, if they are placed around your throat, she's probably slightly upset.0 -
Well i attended the interview.
6 week wait on the outcome.
I dont know if i made it clear that i stopped claiming income support and housing benefit a few months after the win.
I was also told this was an anonymous tip off so i am reluctant to post much more info here as it wouldnt be too hard for the "anonymous" person to find this post in a public forum but i felt it only fair to give yous an update seen as id asked and recieved advice from some helpful people here.
I will give a very brief update whenever i get the decision for the reasons above.
Id also like to thank those who have been helpful in the thread it is very much appreciated.0 -

what is wrong with the people of this country ?????
so what someone has won some money by doing something there obviously good at .
i too would like someone previously posted ,invest the money into a small business for the future .
yes maybe thy have done wrong by not declaring it ,but our goverment and rules suck big time ,instead of saying "well you owe us xxx amount of money and you have to pay it back " they throw you in jail how dumb is that ??? more tax payers money lost .
but if you commit death by dangerous driving because you were drunk you get a 3 year sentence ,serve 18 months of it and are back out on the road again with a clear concience .
this goverment is money mad rob the poor feed the rich , didnt see any of the MP'S go to jail for fraud when they were furnishing there houses with 20 and 30 grand scams .
but would send a mother with kids to jail for a few grand .0
