I'm assuming you're a dentist ;) how much would I be likely to pay if I just had the tooth out, and would it be recommended? i think I've read that these crowns may need replacing in the future?

If you had the tooth out, then everything in your treatment plan would be included in the Band 2 £46.40 charge.

Whether it's recommended or not is down to the state of the tooth, which I can't see.

Crowns do need replacing, but then so does everything every now and again.

Having teeth out can cause more problems too sometimes.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

I just have a thin wall of tooth remaining (!) rest is filling.

yes you're right, I guess I've been lucky so far never had much problem with my teeth.

No - with teeth moving into the gaps and not biting properly any more. Or plaque building up more in the gaps and putting the teeth around the gap in more danger. Or the remaining teeth having to do more work, and wear rate increasing on those.

I have one of the silver crowns. Its on a back tooth and it actually went from bright silver to a gold colour very quickly, and does not stand out. You cannot really see it even when I smile as its at the back, the only time I see it is when I clean my teeth. I was offered the white crown but as the tooth was so far back it just was not worth the extra money.

Silver crowns make it look like you had a dentist in Pre Glasnost USSR. They're horrible things, and when it came to pass that that was all we were allowed to do on back teeth on the NHS was the day I decided to leave the NHS.

The best crowns for back teeth are proper gold ones. If you can live with the colour.

Bottom back teeth are not very visible, so that's generally the crown I recommend for there. They can last for decades if done well.
