  • Toothsmith, thank you for your reply - I will take it up with the dentist. Must say that I trust the guy, have been with him several years and have felt that he has given me good treatment. I will be disappointed and disillusioned if he is trying to con me......

The point is that he probably WOULD lose money on a treatment like this, but that is the terms of the NHS contract. If he didn't like it, he shouldn't have signed it.

There are many treatments where patients do just need small treatment items doing, and the idea was that those treatments balance up the big ones.

I doubt very much he's refusing to take the £42 NHS fee for a single tiny filling - and so by the same token, he shouldn't be refusing treatment - or splitting treatment into smaller packages - if someone needs a lot doing.

The bit there that really annoyed me was the blatent lie of telling you your treatment would cost £198 'per crown'.

I hope this was just a misunderstanding - especially as you get on well with him. But it certainly ISN'T £198 per crown if the crowns can be done in the same treatment plan.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.
  • Hi all

about fifteen months ago, i had root canal and a crown put in, the crown cost me £470, yesterday after foolishly accepting the offer of a strawberry Bon Bon, the crown came out with the root attached.
I went back to the dentist today and he said that it could not be saved. he put a temporary dressing on and said I needed a new crown and root canal at a total cost of £835!!!
theres no way I can afford this. while i waited at reception i remembered my crown and asked for it back...he did get it but when i got home i saw he had cut the root off!!!
My question is should there have been some sort of guarantee for the crown as 15 months is not a long time. he also did some metal fillings at the same time and he said these need to redone. i thought these lasted years?
    thanks

I'm not sure if these things have a guarentee or not, but know how you feel, i had a crown put on a few years ago, costing over £300, and then 5 weeks later had to have it and the tooth underneath take out as there was an infection under it.

I did look into complaining, firstly of the cost for 5 weeks and second due to the fact i was sure that the infection under the tooth had occured when the crown was placed, but in the end i just didnt bother!

I'd say you should be able to have a crown last more than 15months, but am not sure how this work, if you admit that you broke it yourself.

If you bought a car, and raced it round Brands Hatch every weekend, you'd expect it to be knackered a lot quicker than the exact same model bought by a little old lady who just drove to church and the shops.

One component of how long something lasts is how well it's made. The other component is how well it's looked after.

  • thanks toothsmith, but i do actually take care with my teeth, the crown was made ok, i was more concerned about the way it was put in.
the thing also is the metal fillings, i have had NHS ones that have lasted for years.
The one point that bothers me the most is that he cut off the root from the crown, i cant believe he actually did that.

They wouldn't be able to put the root back in though
  • I can't believe that the dentist is recommending amalgam fillings be replaced in less than two years. Those things can last for decades if the teeth are healthy and well looked-after. I'd be looking for a new dentist immediately
  • Hello

Can anybody help, i was sat in the dentists chair last week getting a filling done when she stopped and said I should really get an inlay done and that they are the same price as a crown , so I got swept along with it and then the next minute im paying £550!!! grrrr, but I felt I had no choice , it wasnt until a few days later I remembered getting a white crown a few years earlier for £250 and this is the same NHS dentists ive been going for years. (even found the invoice)

Does anyone know how much they have paid for a white inlay/crowns?

I think I might have a ring around other dentists tommorow as Im not having it fitted until the 30th. Is it too late for me to query this cost as I have already coffed up? could another dentist pick up where the original dentist left off?
