They're normally pretty reliable. Don't go opening beerbottles with them though, or even worse - biting fingernails!
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

My DH had his tooth crowned this afternoon at a cost of £50 (he also pays £15 a month for Denplan). The crown lasted just 3 hours - breaking off the 'peg' that holds the crown in place, whilst eating his tea.

Is this common or should he be asking for a refund? Surely the dentist could see that the peg wasn't capable of holding the crown??

    Any advice would be welcome

    Thanks x

    Go back to the dentist.

    Crowns lasting 3h isn't common.

A refund won't really help - you need a tooth and it's going to cost way more than £50 anywhere else he goes - even on the NHS it would be £198.

What he wants is for the dentist to do it properly.

We all have stuff that occasionally goes a bit wrong. The trick is to put it right promptly and keep the patient happy. Give your dentist the chance to do this.

Hi I’ve been doing my tooth for a past month, root canal for crown and as everybody else I’ve got a choice of silver or gold and white one cost 300 pounds. Can you get a treatment on NHS and pay only for the white crown? How much is just the crown not the work to fit it?
    Thanks
  • I went to the dentist this week first time in a couple of years - I thought I had lost part of a filling but it turns out I have lost part of my tooth...also need another 2 fillings. Dentist quoted me £198 including the fillings if I went for the silver crown, or £398  if I went for the white one. If I decided not to make a decision there and then it would be another £46!!! "Well what do you want to do" she asked me, I had absolutely no idea! Whatever colour I had in my cheeks must of drained away quite quickly (I dread the dentist :o) and I just wanted to cry :o

I have another appointment in 2 weeks.

The tooth in question is bottom left 2 teeth in from the back so not that visable when I smile, but I really don't fancy a shiny looking silver crown and can't afford it either as no dental insurance or anything (never thought about getting it) so wondering whether to lose the tooth!?

Someone at work said they had their tooth built up with a white filling which was a bit cheaper.

I can't understand where the 'extra' £46 comes from.

The options she's given you sound right, she's offered to do it on the NHS, and a private option, so that's OK.

If you just have the fillings done now, they will cost £46.40 (I think), but if you decide to have the crown as part of the same treatment, then you would pay the rest, up to the £198 max charge.

If you left it more than 8 weeks, it would count as a 'new' treatment plan, and the you would pay another full £198, as well as the £46.40 you'd already spent.

So if you went down that road, it would be an extra £46 you'd end up paying, but you have a few weeks to decide, needn't be 'there and then'.

As to the rest of it, I can't recommend whether a filling would do the job or not without seeing you. But I would have assumed that your dentist would have given you all the options available to you.

Thanks for that, i don't think it was explained very well to me....I felt like I was put on the spot a bit, £200 is a lot of money and telling me that I would have to pay an extra £46 if I didn't make my mind up there and then seemed a bit unfair!

No options were given to me as to what to do, i either have a crown or lose the tooth!
