I put in hours at my job so that I can be happy. If I didn't work I couldn't afford the clothes and flights and hotels to see my OH.

So to me 37.5 hours per week of boredom is worth it for the sake of being able to do what I want to do instead of sitting on my backside on the dole till a dream job comes up which may never happen!
I don't think he means boredom, I think he means something more like elfen's post at the bottom of page 2.

yes there is a lot of difference between being bored in a job to a job that makes you feel so bad that you completely dread it and in the OP's case, actually feel suicidal because of it.

I dread going into work somedays (or did). I had a four hour commute then eight hours work and hated it until I got my transfer. Didn't get on with my manager and worked with a group of complete idiots. But I still did it because I needed the money and for the lifestyle I choose to have I have to go to work regardless.

OP, start focusing on the positives of your career. Ok, so it may not be the best job in the world, or pay the best. But there must be something good about it? Do you have friends there? I'm sure theres many people in the same boat as you, myself included...but there is a way out, unfortunately with the current jobhunting state it's just a little bit harder to come by. Good luck with it!

. I am a student at college aged 39 and I support myself by working in my local shop earning £6 an hour, which I love. I'm following my dream, I was given a chance I didn't think I would ever get, over the last two years I have worked in awful crappy temping jobs just to pay the rent, i do exactly the same working in the shop, we all do it, for most of us we work to pay the bills, and we have pride in what we do - might not have much money left at the end of the month, but we sure as hell have earned it!

I'm very pleased to live in a society and pay taxes with people like you; I feel great satisfaction and belonging when I see posts like this - that little people and the basic structue can do things and is right.

nirelandguy, view your job for what it is...a means to an end.

Go to college and do a night course to improve your lot and move on-wards and up-wards. Set yourself a goal, focus on achieving it and make plans for your future.

One of life's greatest misconceptions is a better job will come along tomorrow...they don't, you need to be pro-active and make them happen.

I dont think a course will help to get a better job or 1 that someone likes doing as employers look or experience do they not

Years ago it used to be the case of the $hittier the job the better the pay to compensate, So something as mundane as working on say a production line in a factory paid not to bad all things considering, It was always well above the min wage and the money was a great motivator.

These days however that is all gone with the influx of migrant workers over recent years, The crappier the job the crappier the pay is the way it works these days and there is simply nothing there to motivate you, If your like me you get paid Friday, by the time you pay bills you are broke Saturday and there is no money left over for any form of treats. Inmany cases you would be better of on the dole.

  • Im currently in a job i dont like, and i can relate to the feeling of dreading going there every day.
Basically it was a job i took as i was being made redundant and obviously i thought been employed is better than not! I used to let it get me down, id come home pi**ed off every day, miserable, tired, then i suddenly realised this is no way to carry on. So im now putting as much time and effort as i can into finding a job i actually want, sure im stuck with mine but i just think of the poor people who are unemployed and WANT to work and suddenly i think to myself im actually really lucky to be in work. And instead of letting it get me down i just get my head down and get on with it, its not a nice feeling when your full time job which takes up the majority of your life is not enjoyable or satisfying but i have a son and i would do anything to make sure he is alright and if that means working a job i dont like then who cares, its not about me, its about him and as long as im bringing home a wage so he can have food in front of him and clothes on his back then thats all that matters.
but like i said im still hunting another job, in fact im considoring a franchise of some kind at the minute.
So i wouldnt say its better to be unemployed than do a job you dont like, id just say there are ways to deal with it, it depends on your circumstances i suppose.

Maybe to support people like yourself, who are perfectly able to work but choose a lifestyle of living on benefits instead.

Dave - for someone without a job or any intention of getting one, you spend an awful lot of time on the Employment board. Most people aren't able to live like you do. In the real world, people endure the same boring job day in day out for years, at the cost of their personal satisfaction, because they have to support their family, pay the bills and put food on the table. I find your above comments extremely crass under the circumstances.

i think he was pointing out the contradiction in what they said.

nirelandguy I know how you have felt, I have always had the philosophy of if a job is getting me down I get out. Its not only the crappy jobs that can get you down, In a previous existance I was an accountant, and by 5 mins past nine in the morning I would be preying for a slow and painful death as it would be infitimnately more exciting than the latest set of management accounts to produce.

It was made worse by my collegues who seemed to love every aspect of bean counting. Thankfully those skills, qualifications and the combination of a huge stroke of luck and a near vertical learning curve, I have carved myself a new career that interests and motivates me and is paid significantly more than what I was bean counting.

Keep searching the right job will be out there for you and dont forget donrt let the bar stewards grind you down.
