Post staff to hold national strikes
Postal workers are to stage two nationwide strikes next week in a bitter row over pay, jobs and working conditions, it has been announced.
About 42,000 mail centre staff and drivers will walk out next Thursday October 22 for 24 hours, followed by another 24-hour stoppage on Friday October 23 by 78,000 delivery and collection staff.
The Communication Workers Union said it had made a "genuine offer" to avert a national strike and accused the Royal Mail of rejecting it without proper consideration.

i am glad i'm not listing my items for sale this week0

I think the posties need to open their eyes...
we are in the middle of a recession... millions unemployed dying for work.. over 700 qued for jobs in a major london department store earlier this week and yet people with jobs are complaining.... makes me sick0 -
I wonder for how long they'll all have jobs, when those of us who depend on a reliable service go elsewhere out of frustration (I'm about to, and I ship 50-100 parcels a week, was happy with Royal Mail's service until this last month)...0

they?
what about the 40,000 jobs cuts over the last 2 years (according the most recent figures ive seen)
you see there have been so many RM posts of late
however were you bothered before the strikes were announced?
were you interested in any of the going on?
had you any interest in the ties of downstream access?
will you be happy as the cuts continue?
no,not until it affects YOU
so perhaps step back and think there's perhaps a bigger picture0 -

so while the top management take their bonuses the workers should let the conditions slip?

The management is to blame as posties are being given sacks too over the allowed weight; sent out to their runs hours late afetr waiting on managers to organise their drop off and lift by the van; moved to different areas each month for no apparant reason and when claiming 30 minutes overtime due to all of the above they are verbally abused. The point is if you were told to do something that was wrong or impossible at work by a clueless managers and you done it then after this situation repeated itself several hundred times you would contact your union rep and guess what a strike happens. Royal Mail management staff are like the SS and you just need to look at the staff tunrover and if anyone is griping about they have a job etc then apply and become a postie and see what happens to you as this should clue some people up. Margaret Thatcher is no longer in power and people must stand up for themselves especially when it concerns health and safety issues. The media can only talk a good game in defending Royal Mail; Banks and the FSA but ther comes a time for action and not words - the time is now!!!I am a Mortgage Adviser0

I work as a courier for Hermes and have certainly seen a rise in parcels over the last few days.
Hermes don't have a customer collection depot so be aware you will need to be at home to receive your goods.
Attempts are made 3 times but you need to contact the couriers tel no left to re arrange delivery, some couriers have no time bands so 8am - 6pm, those with time bands only before or after 1pm.0 -

To be honest: as I see it I'm the customer here, and a very good one at that, having had at least a hand in keeping our local post office open in the latest closures (together of course with a number of other similar businesses). As an entrepreneur I don't have (nor do I expect) job security. I and my family have made a lot of sacrifices over the past couple of years, including risking our own hard-earned savings to pay for stock, not taking a salary while building the business from scratch, working ALL hours (late evenings, weekends, Bank Holidays).
I don't dispute that RM workers may be hard done by, however I work too hard to subsidise anyone else in addition to the people who already depend on me (family and employees) - I make no apologies for this! For me, it's a clinical, business decision: if RM doesn't provide the service I need, I'll have to look elsewhere. If others like me do the same and that then means that RM have to make further cuts, then tough.
I just don't think these strikes are going to achieve anything productive for anyone, including the RM workers. Seriously hurting your customers can never be a great idea
