We could just get the planning permission re-instated, build the extension and split the house in two if you want. I'm not really greedy :D
Or will that be three now?

That sounds fair - I'd be a very quiet neighbour as I'd hardly ever be there as I work in Hertfordshire :)

  • I can't help wondering why no-one is moving this thread back and rescuing it from Game Over?

I have PM'ed the OP and also a board guide...

I suppose it doesn't matter really; we all know it's here, and we keep checking in!
It's Gilla who does the dailies, I PMed her yesterday to ask her to move it back so hopefully she will :)
Thanks to everyone who posts comps, I love winning prizes big and small

    Hmmm.

Done a little more digging. Did a search for "chapel lane allerton" on google maps and have managed to find an aerial photograph.

The aerial picture on the winahouseforfree website looks great. However, this appears to be old as the up to date one on google maps seems to show the property bordered by big fences and the next door house being demolished/stripped out or whatever. It's got all the appearances of a chuffing building site!

It certainly looks like some sort of major development is underway..anyone know exactly what's going on there? There's no mention of this on the website..

Odd, looks exactly as pictured to me. IT's the smaller house with a little extension on the left side..not the big square shaped one. We only win the house, not the postcode you know ? :rotfl:

I did a lot of googling as well, and what worries me is that the house seems to back onto a park, where it's entirely possible that local youths would hang out at night. Could this be the reason behind the comment on their website about the occasional beer can appearing on their flowerbeds? (I may be misquoting them on that, as I read it a long time ago, and can't remember where it is on the website, but it was something along those lines).

I grew up in a house where some youths used to hang out on the other side of our fence (on the street corner), and until my Dad put up an actual brick wall, they would come in and out of our garden to urinate and leave their litter. After the wall appeared, they would still toss their beer cans over it. Not very nice.

Still, all houses have their pros and cons, and I'm sure if any of us actually won it, we'd stop moaning and being suspicious and just be amazingly happy that we'd won A FREE HOUSE! :j

If you carry on googling you might just come across a website with pics of the house interior. I found some, and was going to post them here, but was worried about breach of copyright. Suffice it to say, THE INSIDE OF THE HOUSE IS LOVELY! :j I cannot understand why they haven't got those pics up on their own website. If people saw the prize they were playing for, there might be a lot more entries!

Edit to say: if anyone wants to see the pics (of jeanmd's new house) I can PM them the link I found. It's nice to dream!

My thinking was that their business went bust so they can no longer afford the house hence the competition?

That's what I'm on about. The big house next door, which shares communal land with the prize house, appears to be a major building site/development site.

However, the pic on the winahouseforfree website is obviously an older one, taken before this development started.

Why no mention of this development on the website? It obviously affects the property being offered as a prize so why isn't in mentioned..?
  • Chopandchange, could you email me a link to pics of the inside? I'd love to have a look.

It crossed my mind too as to why there were no pics of the inside, just of the outside. I'd assumed that the inside must be a bit grotty, hence the lack of pics.

Obviously, if someone gave me a free house I certainly wouldn't complain!! However, I'm a tad suspicious and think there may be more to this story than meets the eye..

I must admit I looked at the inside photos when this was first put online. The details used to be with the stepping stones estate agent where it was still up for sale when the competition started.
It looks very, very nice inside. It also looked empty.

The wall/fence around the property has been there from the beginning, although I can see what you mean about work being carried out on the house next door. I've tried looking for planning permission on it, but can't find anything so I'm hoping it's just having a 'makeover'.

As they say if you don't like it sell it as a building plot. but I must admit it would suit us fine. A downstairs bedroom which is needed for my OH and a full floor upstairs for DD. :D The only trouble I'd have is finding enough furniture to fit in there, but a problem I'm happy to deal with.

I agree that it looks empty!

    It's a puzzler all round.

Just been doing some very rough maths..

They say on their website that an "Entry route" advert would cost you £200 and there are 20 of those a day. That gives a total of £4,000 raised per day via entry route ads alone.

They go on to say that ads cost £10 to £200. Working on the basis that £10 will buy you the smallest ad and £200 an entry route one I guesstimate that each page brings in about £700, in addition to the entry route ads. Times this by 8 pages of ads and you get £5,600.

That's a grand total of £9,600 per day or £67,200 per week.

Assuming this comp runs for the full 21 weeks the site stands to bring in £1,411,200 or thereabouts (Yes, one point four million quid)

Does it really give the impression of a site that brings in that much money? Could the type of advertisers on the site actually afford to spend £1.4m between them on ads?? I mean, it's been running quite a few weeks and they should have more than enough cash now to have hired some temporary help yet they still insist that they are running this by themselves?

    Come on, people...

I'm not saying not to enter, just don't get your hopes up..
