Can I ask why you are concerned about 1080p when you won't have any 1080p content to watch on it? Are you at least considering getting an HD provider ? (remembering of course that will only be 720p)

  • I know that is another problem - do we get a TV with Freesat built in or buy a HD freesat box?
(Or can we get HD without buying HD box?)
Don't want to go down the SKY route as i find them too expensive

We still have a satallite dish from when we had Sky before

It depends on whether you want to record HD programs as well - if you want to record get a Freesat PVR, if not get it built in. You need to be careful of which set you go for as some are not proper Freesat but a version of it.

You need something capable of giving you HD.

Bit confused what you mean by an HD provider will only be 720p. Sky broadcast at 1080i. Although this is not the p variety it does mean that a 1080p set can pixel map 1:1 without the need to downscale the resolution. And of course Blu-Ray is 1080p and I see no harm in future proofing. Was actually a priority for me when I choose a set. I would rather pay a little more now then a lot more in the future. False economy otherwise.

Whether or not 1080 is needed pretty much depends on the size of the set and your distance from it.

    50" would benefit, possibly 42" but not a 37".

I asked a similar question on AV Forums.

We have all of ours running on an HD feed, but with SD aerial connections too. They all go out on default settings, and get played around with during their time out there.

I don't know anyone who would refuse to switch to standard def to demo it.

Try Currys in Swindon then for a start ! All they could offer was a piddly little TV stuck in a corner on SD Sky - all the big sets were on an HD and "sorry sir we can't change that".

In John Lewis in Salisbury the man got a length of aerial lead and swapped over each set as I asked him - guess who got my order ?

If you have an old Sky dish then you could buy either a Freesat box or a television with built-in Freesat (Panasonic & LG do them) and then you will get HD BBC and HD ITV (with the other public service broadcasters following soon, I believe) without subscription.

Connected my Panasonic Freesat set to my 15 year-old Sky dish and it worked immediately with no adjustment. BBC HD on Freesat is 1080i - don't know about ITV though, but presume they are also. Nobody in UK broadcasts in 1080p.

Also, according to QVC shopping channel (who are on the Sky satellite) Sky HD is only 720, not 1080. I have seen two separate people from television manufacturers (not the actual QVC presenters) mention this point in recent weeks. I found that hard to believe - perhaps someone could confirm?

HD is coming to Freeview soon, again without subscription but I belive you will need a new Freeview box (even if the TV has built-in Freeview) to receive it.

I recommend you look at this webpage:

    http://whathifi.com/

    I would recommend the following:

    (1) Panasonic TX-P42G10 - go to John Lewis and tell them your local richer sounds is selling this for only £750. They will price match it as they sell it in-store for £899, and you will get the free 5yrs guarantee. This is a 42 inch plasma screen with built in freeview and freesat.

    (2) Samsung UE40B7000 The new LED tv. Much thinner and lighter. You can handle this on the wall easily!!! However, will cost you around £1000-£1200 depending on the place you want to buy. Just to tell you, until November - £100-£150 cashback from Samsung. Energy saving too.
Motto: 'If you don't ask, you don't get!!'

Remember to say thank you to people who help you out!

Sky broadcast there HD channels at 1920x1080i. BBCHD and ITVHD broadcast at 1440x1080i. LuxeHD 1280x1080i

Those are the ones I know.

The box allows you to choose between 720p or 1080i.
