A little more cash might get you the Corolla T Sport Compressor (1 of 250) which is the supercharged version so you don't have to thrash it quite so much
Fiesta ST won't be that quick, Peugeot (French Cough...)
From your list
Leon - Good choice - I'd swap for the Toledo as it's much cheaper
Type R - Good choice - Have to thrash it to get anywhere though
Mazda - 2.0 Sport isn't that sporty - Certainly not even a warm hatch
Astra - More a coupe that a hatch
Corolla - Good Choice - Similar to Typre R for Driving
Other thoughts
Mini Cooper S (Bit estate agenty, might not be many in your price bracket)
Saab 9-3 (Re-babdge Vauxhall, Not Cheap to Service)
Impreza (Costly to run, insure etc - Great to Drive though)
MG Z Series (Image, Relability - Cheap!!)
Fiat Stilo Abarth (See Above)
Good shout on the T Sport Compressor but I imagine they will be out of my price bracket and pretty damn hard to find!"He's a maniac, maniac that's for sure,

Nissan Almera GTi. is 143bhp - not 170 and Primera is 150- 0-60 way off as it is 8.4 - not 7.2 - in fact a 140 bhp Sunny GTi will muller it a 0-60 of 6.8.But yes Almera fab drivers car
Celica engine to peaky and needs to be worked hard
Best bet is BMW 320D 150bhp tons of grunt and refinement and owners reporting 40mpg with ease
The 3 series beemer is a little on the large side for me...the 1 series would be better..actually saying that I wonder if I can get a 120i with my budget.Hmmmm"He's a maniac, maniac that's for sure,

Not everyone takes part in the traffic light grand prix, as if they did they wouldn't be beaten by any astra except maybe the Turbo (which your 2.2 isn't)
I never said I beat everyone in my 2.2 Astra 'in the traffic light grand prix', I dont think I've even mentioned that I have beaten anyone at the lightsIm sure a 1.8/2.0/2.2 Sri Astra would beat a 1.4 escort, The 1.8 SRi (123bhp) actually has a close ratio gear box that will take it up to 60 quicker than the 2.0 and 2.2, the 1.8 has a lot in 1st & 2nd, good lower down but once you get to higher speeds not so great as the revs are so high.
None of the cars you mentioned will do a real world 0-60 in under 7 seconds.
The Type R will, and so will the GSi http://forum.astraownersnetwork.co.uk plenty of real 6.5s on proper timed track days
Personally OP I'd go for the Type R

Not just that, the 2.2 isn't even a hot hatch! It's got less that 145bhp and does 0-60 in 8 seconds!

2.2i 16V SRi 3d (AC) 7.9 s 133 mph 144 bhp
Which appears to have the same 0-60 the same as an A3 1.8T http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/specs/Detail.aspx?deriv=12140 http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/specs/Detail.aspx?deriv=36187, and faster to 60 than the golf GTi 1.8T http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/specs/Detail.aspx?deriv=14126, unless you go for the 180 edition.
Ive not once said it was a HOT hatch?0 -
No, but you mentioned it'd pull away from a VRs (that didn't know you were racing it) Let's be fair, VRs being fast or not, the figures are there for us to see. It's a damn sight faster that a 2.2 astra. I don't doubt you pulled away from it but I recon it didn't know you were racing each other. It's a lot quicker than you give credit for. Its 55 more bhp and loads more torque, if it were trying you'd not have pulled away.0 -

0.3? not even half a second quicker to 60, and yes he knew we were having a play as I know the driver!, given the condition we were only up to 80mph, and yeah he probably would of past me after that, Im not saying its a very slow rubbish car, im merely stating that there is faster better looking thing out there in that price range. - and no im not talking about my astra 2.2!
OK you have a Skoda VRs and you love it, fair enough,

No, if you read the posts i'm lucky enough to own a couple of cars but not a VRs.
I just find it funny when people talk about pulling away from other cars when their own car won't pull the skin off a rice pudding. Not getting at you, everyone does it. There have been people saying 1.8 diesels pull like trains, 1.4 diesels beat boy racers at lights. No one admits they have a slow car. One of my favorite cars is my GTA, it's ridiculously powerfull, but it's an awfull car! It's just great fun.0 -
I agree with you, and I dont think my car is fantastic and will beat everything on the road, but to be fair i think 7.9 aint to bad, i dont 'race' with cars that i know are faster, thats why i was quite surprised by the VRs incident. Im looking to change my car soon (focus st) hopefully.
But it got to the stage where it was 'anything' will beat your astra'.. well a lot of things would, and in my posts I have'nt recommended the Astra to the OP, i went for the civic type R (wouldnt get the new one tho - there 'suppose' to be rubbishlol )
I only mentioned about diesels earlier as I think people have been brain washed by the whole diesel 'thing' -give me a powerful petrol ( Audi RS4 would be nice) over a powerful diesel anyday, but thats just my opinion , i like the sound of a powerful V8 , which you dont get in a tractor, sorry Diesel

I agree, the new civic's got torsion beam suspension. Thats poor for such a good first effort.
I'm not fan of diesel, I had the 335d for a while whilst I was doing lots of miles and it was a great car but it's no petrol.
I totally agree with the brainwashed thing, I think just because diesels have improved people think they're the bee's knees now. They're still the option for economy, and if you're bothered all that much about economy then performence is not where you should be looking.0
