Oooh! John Lewis have them, not cheap but free returns. And they seem more like the real thing
nb just noted they are out of stock but I have asked them to email me before when things have come back in and they do seem to get new stock quite quickly.0 -
Flannelette is cotton with a nap to give it softness - the nap is created by brushing the cotton after weaving - therefore flanelette is brushed cotton. I suspect they started referring to it as 'brushed cotton' to make it sound more modern than flannelette which is probably considered old fashioned.
I do agree that modern sheets are often of thinner quality that older ones though - think this applies to woven cottons too -I rememebr thick stiff sheets and loved them - modern bedding never seems as 'crisp'.People seem not to see that their opinion of the world is also a confession of character.

Thanks for your help everybody, and I'll check out John Lewis - I might be able to get to their Reading store and they probably would have them there.0

Hi LadyDee,
I got some from Dunelm mill and they're lovely. We have an existing thread that may give you more ideas:

I'll add your thread to that one later to keep the suggestions together.

Flannelette is just brushed cotton...I used to work in a fabric shop and we sold all of this stuff. It came in different weights though, including a heavier and harder wearing wide width sheeting quality that cost more. Winceyette was also just brushed cotton, in a lighter weight than normal and in nice colours or printed with little flowers or baby prints and was sold to make childrens' or ladies' PJs or nighties. Men got striped flannelette in a thicker weight for their PJs and it was just called flannel.Val.0

I treated myself (us!) to a King Size Flannelette Quilt Set from Q>C last year - got the cheapest (pink rose one) as they're a bit pricey.
I have to say it's amazing! Real old-fashioned snuggles, as I had in the 60s when I was a little girl!:j
Given half a chance I think my OH would have the set on all year! LOL. They come up quite generous, size-wise, and wash beautifully.

OMG!!!! I've just put two king sized candy-striped flanelette sheets through the machine with a red dylon dye.
I am a Mum on a PJ making mission - my 2 boys and 4 other kids are getting red flannel jammies on Christmas eve:D
If I'd known they were so highly prized I would have sold them on Fleabay.:rotfl: Mind you I got mine for £3 at a jumble sale because "no-one likes them any more"
