Flannelette is just brushed cotton...I used to work in a fabric shop and we sold all of this stuff. It came in different weights though, including a heavier and harder wearing wide width sheeting quality that cost more. Winceyette was also just brushed cotton, in a lighter weight than normal and in nice colours or printed with little flowers or baby prints and was sold to make childrens' or ladies' PJs or nighties. Men got striped flannelette in a thicker weight for their PJs and it was just called flannel.
Thanks for that info - it's so difficult judging quality online - and even some sheets I've found in shops is certainly much, much thinner than I remember flannelette being.
When enquiring, is there a specific weight I should be asking for?0 -
I treated myself (us!) to a King Size Flannelette Quilt Set from Q>C last year - got the cheapest (pink rose one) as they're a bit pricey.
I have to say it's amazing! Real old-fashioned snuggles, as I had in the 60s when I was a little girl!:j
Given half a chance I think my OH would have the set on all year! LOL. They come up quite generous, size-wise, and wash beautifully.

Thanks, I'll have a look at QVC too.0 -

Not really...I'm sure there will be a gram per square metre measurement for this sort of thing but as to what it is, no idea. I think you'd have to judge by price and brand name.Val.0 -

from this U.S company i bought a couple of sheets and can recommend wholeheartedly on their super warmth. looking at the website, landsend seems to have put their prices up considerably. i was highly stung by the custom taxes back then (8yrs ago!). the sheets are still in good nick, with no pilling etc.,0 -
They are more into "flannel" (and good quality flannel at that) in the US although it is mainly German or Portuguese flannel they use. The weight in gsm (grams per square metre) or ozs (ounces per square yard) should be given to compare quality but of course here in the UK, where anything goes, except at the very highest ends of the market, the info we get is "take it or leave it" mainly. About 5 is considered ok in US, 6oz very luxurious and there are still dome 8oz sheet blankets to be found which are probably like we used to have in this country years ago.
There are some flannel sheets in Dunelm Mill but they are not cheap and do not have the weight displayed so hard to say what the quality is. Napguard used to be ok years ago but the last time I bought them after a couple of washes the king size sheet would not even fit a double bed! The very.co.uk ones are fairly thin and bobble. No experience with NothernNights and QVC. Perhaps better to send to the US if you can afford it for good quality.
I have heard washing with salt water before first use is supposed to stop shedding.
Unless you are dealing with best quality sheets or never wash above 30 or never use a tumble drier, I reccommend buying a size bigger than you need, especially if you have a deep mattress and are buying cheaper sheets which can tend not to be adequately sized anyway. Beware - Cheaper thinner flannel shrinks and bobbles.
Why don't we all keep asking what the weight is so shops start bothering to find out and display the information and we shoppers get better information, service and deals?!
Tried to past an Imperial to Metric weight conversion link but cannot - just google flannel + gsm + oz if interested.0 -

What a useful post - thank you!
I have been trying for weeks to find 'proper' flanelette sheets such as my grandmother used (indeed I still have a couple!). Nothing matched up to them until I found some at a local car boot sale. They'd probably been in a linen press or airing cupboard for years and I got them for £1 a sheet. So four double sheets for under a fiver :j0 -
For those who want flannelette but a bit more modern, see here http://www.helenaspringfield.co.uk/brushedcotton.html bit pricey but lovely."You've been reading SOS when it's just your clock reading 5:05 "0
