  • The upshot is that stores who did test the pay-display-refund concept (we know of three supermarket chains who trialled it around 10 years ago) abandoned the idea...

Not quite sure where you get this from - it seems quite common around here. Asda in both Stockport and Hyde do it, many local Co-ops operate a similar system and I believe Matalan in Stockport also does it, although I don't park there when I want to shop as I don't always buy which defeats the point of the scheme.

I also know of several that do this round here. One of them has a barrier and will only let you out if you show your parking ticket stamped by the cashier or pay for parking at £5 per hour. They also charge you if you took longer than 2 hours to do your shopping.

But since when have you seen a car park attendant with a database to hand?

Most now have some form of hand held computer which can easily programmed to show any car numbers in a 'black' list. An eleven year old could write the software with their eyes shut ;)

i wouldnt think to check the opening times when most supermarkets DO open at 8 or even earlier. Aldi is very behind the times (litterally!)

i wouldnt say aldi are behind the times but lets agree to disagree on that,
  • There is an Aldi in Gorgie which as a ANPR camera and signs up stating 1.5hrs. This has stopped me parking their whilst going to watch the glorious Hearts, reading this thread has me thinking why not park there!

    Cheers and Happy Christmas.
If it takes a man a week to walk to walk a fortnight how long does it take a fly with tackity boots on to walk through a barrel of treacle?

One of our local Aldis has had to do similar (the other doesn't) because otherwise the carpark would be swamped with football supporters' cars on matchdays and no one else would be able to get in. All the retail carparks around there have similar going on on a Saturday... aaah the joys of living near a football ground.

  • I know I'd be tempted to ensure a dollop or two of mud was splashed on the numberplate just before entering and I'm sure it would fall off whilst the car was parked. Not deliberately of course but with the current snow and slush, who knows?
