Its ok saying once your youngest is 7 you should have a job of 16 hours a week or more but what are you supposed to do with them in the holidays take them with you!!
Thats why you could put your name down for a dinner lady job at a local school, that way you will get the same time off as your children during the holidays and bank holidays etc. You will then be able to claim WTC and CTC. Even if the school has no vancancies it is worth just putting your name down. Also if you get a 16+ week job that requires you to work during school days off then you could get the child carer WTC thingy0 -

I have just received the letter saying the change will be in feb. My eldest and youngest dont get on , as my eldest has some behavour issues due to a mild physical disability and low self esteem, i would trust them for maybe half hour but no longer that that. It would have to be work in a school , where do i find jobs within a school? I know i should contact my WFI lady but my confidence is down a bit and i keep thinking ill do it tomorrow. Was thinking maybe going to college to refresh office skills or do a teaching assistant course but not sure how that would effect my benefits. I currently have a morgage which will be paid up in around 3 years,( although the house is in desparate need of repair) .Thanks so much for all the help and advice
if you look on your local authorities website they will have jobs in schools advertised on there
good luck0 -
In many areas the school meals service has been privatised and is no longer provided by the council. Vacancies will be advertised locally by whichever company that has the contract.
In many areas, domestic cleaners are so hard to come by that some people may be prepared to let someone work term time only. Of course, if you were only working for a couple of hours at a stretch, your 14 year old might be able to cope with the responsibility.0 -

I was offered a dinner lady job couple of years ago, could kick myself now for not taking it but i didn't want to give up the job i was doing then.
Trouble is as of next year when your youngest is 7 a lone parent is expected to find a job or 16 hours or more and as far as i am aware well definately round here a dinner ladies hours are no way near that!0 -
Just a cautionary note really. Last year i left my 15 year old to pick up my 9 & 10 year old from school as i didnt finish work till 3.15pm and missed them coming out of school daily. They walked home and by the time they got home i was there. On one occasion they witnessed a fatal car accident and eldest daughter phoned police/ambulance/myself and waited till they arrived. All the children had to give a statement to the police.
4 days after this accident the police turned up at our door to interview me and my husband over concerns raised of child neglect in the fact the my eldest regulary picked up my younger 2 from school on her way home.(Her school was less than 100 metres away across the road from theirs)
This was followed by a 7 month investigation by Social Services at which no further action was needed, thankfully. But it caused immense pressure at the time. I would not now in hindsight recommend that any person under 16 be left resposible for younger siblings. Whilst it might be legal, if anything happens you are responsible.Any hints/tips advice is appreciated

Many people make up their hours with another job - a couple of hours or so cleaning, for example.0 -

I'm a dinner lady and I work 16.1 hours a week.0 -
I was a dinner lady last year, it was 6.5 hours a week. Most of the dinner ladies who monitor the children at lunchtime in my council only work 6.5 hours, the kitchen staff work more hours, but our council is reducing its staff due to the reduction of children taking school lunches, my daughters high school, a sandwich is £1.60 and a drink is 80p, I simply will not pay for that each day for two children...its almost £96.00 a month for two children, most average families cannot afford that during a recession when salaries have been frozen and ulility bills are on the increase...rant over..
OP, I would recommend a teaching assistant job but you need NVQ's to enable you to be a TA, ask at your job centre to put you on a training course, this will buy you more time to find a job if you are on a course.0 -
Dinner ladies only seem to work 6-7 hours a week here too, but they often do cleaning and/or other jobs in the schools too. Do you still have lollipop ladies/men in your area?
On a slightly different note though, if you do just 16 hours a week in term time only, are you still able to claim wtc, as your average hours over the year would be less than 16?0
