Of course Emmy is doing the right thing. This is the sort of trivial thing that can develop into a family feud if it's taken wrongly, so just put it down to experience and next time do what someone else suggested and get vouchers or ask your SIL if there is anything her daughter would like for her birthday.

Also how many people on here have not opened something on Christmas Day in front of Aunty Ethel and had to say "Oh what a lovely pair of knitted eyebrow warmers, I have been looking for these everywhere" and then flogged them on eBay the following week.....

The silence was deafening...

I feel for the OP - it must be so disheartening to see a gift you have chosen be described as unwanted and to be sold on.

I for one would rather not receive presents at Christmas. I'd much rather receive a gift from my immediate family - husband and children, and leave it at that. I prefer the gift of time - my sister yesterday offered to look after my children for a weekend so my husband and I can go away for a weekend - this is the most valuable gift I have ever received.

Do not be hard on your s-in-l, she obviously has tried to 'get rid' of your gift in a discreet way - she isn't to know that you know her ebay id. Take heart in the fact that you bought the gift in good faith and with good intentions, and next time - spend the money on yourself and enjoy it.

Dormouse I agree whole-heartedly. My children were given so much last year, I found it so very hard to cope with. What was worse was that the children were not even impressed by most of the gifts - it wasn't that they were ungrateful - just completely overwhelmed. The gifts were bought with great intentions - people clearly know my children! My daughter wrote over 20 thank you letters, and most of the items are un-touched.

I know that people went to alot of trouble for my children, and I wish they hadn't - because I have the guilt all year of knowing that something bought out of genuine love is just sitting there.

let us not make big deal outofsoemthing like this.you in law did accept your present.she obviously knows that she doesnt need it or she need some money.she didnt through it away or gave it free.so take it as positive and genuine reason for sale

There is no way of knowing what her finances are like, she may be selling the item reluctantly so we really shouldn't judge.

My more wicked side though would be tempted to buy it and then give your Sister In Laws own name and address to her to send it to, say it is a suprise gift because you know how much she loved the last one you bought her.

But being serious again it is best to let sleeping dogs lie, you never know what situation you may end up in the future and have to sell off cherished gifts to keep your head above water.
