Of course, if you don't download from bit torrents, stay clear of adult sites and never install anything from t'interweb, you're probably not going to get so much of a virus problem anyway. Or use a mac.I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll

Gone ahead and dumped MSSE. I took forever to update, kept requesting to send the same file for scanning to MS (ntoskrnl.exe, from memory) nd kept making the computer freeze for no apparent reason.
One of the processes was taking 95%+ of the CPU for several minutes at a time.
Not one of MS greatest triumphs.
Hmm - I've had no such issue on 6 machines I installed MSSE on. Perhaps you had some other conflicting security software running in parallel?

Don't think so.
I properly uninstalled Avira (using Add/Remove programs). Rebooted (as it suggested) and then installed MSSE from the installer I'd downloaded earlier.
I also have the PCTools free firewall installed but that's been on there for ages.:wall: Flagellation, necrophilia and bestiality - Am I flogging a dead horse? :wall:
