Is Microsoft Security Essentials any good or am I better sticking with Avira?

What about an old XP Home box? It's only running 1GB ram with an AMD processor.
Requirements section on the MS page seem to be covered, but you never know!

    See reviews - http://www.virusbtn.com/news/2009/10_02.xml

  • So if someone was about to run off a cliff, you'd just let them do so, rather than warn them there was a cliff ahead?

Cause with AVG, you're running off a security cliff.

The techie board is already clogged with hundreds of threads full of posts arguing about the 'best' free AV software, never reaching a conclusion, all based on personal preference, quoting dire consequences of making the wrong choice, each one adding nothing to the previous threads....

If I was to ask where I could buy windows vista I wouldn't expect the majority of the posts to be telling me to get linux instead

Thanks Baldur - I've just read the reviews and it seem to say it's not a true AV product. Seems a bit confusing tome from the comments on the second site you posted. The review itself seems to say that it is a true AV product and is lighter on resources than just about everything else.

I think I'll install and give it a go. I can always go back to Avira if I don't like it.

Be warned that sometimes something simple like uninstalling isnt that easy with a Microsoft product

    True - but there's always their clean-up utility (!)

As the software is very new I highly doubt theres a specific 'clean up' utility that would work properly
