If I was to ask where I could buy windows vista I wouldn't expect the majority of the posts to be telling me to get linux instead
But if you asked where to get Microsoft Office, the first 10 replies would tell you to get Open Office.
The Vista analogy you posted is an anomaly, because there isn't any real alternative. Fair enough, there is Mac's but they aren't compatible with every other program that's out there, and there's Linux and other free O/S but they aren't fully compatible either. So I don't know why you would get told to get Linux, just purely because Microsoft has got the market sown up.Northern Ireland club member No 382 :j0 -

Everybody has their own preference yes, but unbiased reviews are also a good indicator:

Having used AVG surely I'm in a position to say it's awful, lets far too many things through.
I know many IT professionals who loathe it and it's apparent 'good' reputation.
While the OP originally asked for AVG, if a reply suggesting something 'better' gets someone else downloading an alternative - Surely a result

What that link fails to mention is Aviras firewall is absolutely awful and its actually safer to use windows inbuilt one:idea:0 -
They're different platforms, so compatibility with malware compiled for Windows is effectively nil.Money_Grabber13579 wrote: »Fair enough, there is Mac's but they aren't compatible with every other program that's out there, and there's Linux and other free O/S but they aren't fully compatible either.
Microsoft may well have the market sewn up, but that just makes them a bigger target.0 -

What I really meant was compatibility with other programs in general, but never mind!;)Northern Ireland club member No 382 :j0 -
Same answer - programs meant for a particular platform won't work in other environments without the aid of an interpreter or emulator.Money_Grabber13579 wrote: »What I really meant was compatibility with other programs in general0 -
As the software is very new I highly doubt theres a specific 'clean up' utility that would work properly
I actually meant the generic one that cleared out the registry (I think) and then lets you delete the folder from the HDD. Untidy, but I've had to use it a few times.:wall: Flagellation, necrophilia and bestiality - Am I flogging a dead horse? :wall:

Just a quick update.
I've installed, updated and am just running MSSE.
It's scanned nearly a million files (and counting) and so far has taken a tad over 5 hours.
Grandson has been on CBBC website which has probably slowed things down, but Avira didn't take this long.:wall: Flagellation, necrophilia and bestiality - Am I flogging a dead horse? :wall:

Gone ahead and dumped MSSE. I took forever to update, kept requesting to send the same file for scanning to MS (ntoskrnl.exe, from memory) nd kept making the computer freeze for no apparent reason.
One of the processes was taking 95%+ of the CPU for several minutes at a time.
Not one of MS greatest triumphs.:wall: Flagellation, necrophilia and bestiality - Am I flogging a dead horse? :wall:
