Not really impressed with them at all. Getting through on the phone is an experience too.

Absolutely. I used to have to wait about ten minutes on average getting though to them when I was with them. Was a joke, tbh...!!

Why do you care? The service is atrocious and the products are all poor these days.

Apart from their currency abroad service from ATM's.. in Europe ( possibly outside of Europe ) it still cannot be beaten.;)

I would order enough foreign money before leaving the UK for the holiday. I think it's cheaper that way.

Care to give us all a link to your supplier?
  • Been with NW for over 20 years and am ID checked etc. but they wouldn't give me a flex account even though they can find nothing bad against me. They come across as so old fashioned and to think that I only kept the account waiting, in vain, for them to convert from a building society and give me some free cash ! Carpetbagging didn't work with them !
  • Nationwide have a very strict lending policy generally. I know...I couldn't even get one when I worked for them despite them obviously knowing I had a wage coming in and no debt!
Also you will no longer get a debit card without it being a prime account as someone else mentioned. This is basically because so many people get the card purely for their holidays and I guess they don't get much profit from that! You can get one with an esavings account, but I think you might just end up with the cash card.
Also its still free to use abroad in the Visa Europe area.

Anyway the best thing to do if you really want a debit card from them is to apply for the flex and get the basic cash card account, and then use it well for 6 months, get wages paid and and dds etc. If you have bad credit I wouldn't expect to get one for a long time, but if you use the cash card well you may be able to upgrade.

Also someone mentioned the £30 cash card limit, think that has been in force for about a year now.

I had very similar situation, but with NatWest.
But I never ever had problem with Nationwide. I joined when they had one of those "move your current account to us and we give you £100" and never looked back since...

To be fair I do not blame them not wanting to give account to people who are not using it as main account but put money in twice a year to withdraw them abroad... servicing accounts costs lots of money and they offer this to their customers as "good customer practice" kind of thing, you know, to make their account better then others. So when thousands of people come and don't give them any real business then that screws it up even for the real customers..

However I think that if you are moving the whole current account there and have no marks on your credit file they should be able to offer you account. And if not there should be procedure to find out why.

Haven't seen it mentioned so far, but make you do an online application for the Flexaccount, not phone or in branch. I was refused several times in branch and on the phone, but after doing an online application I was given the debit card account and a gold credit card to boot. Also it seems to help if you don't request an O/D. This was all prior to the new "primary account or savings" rule though, so it may not be this easy now.

You seem to forget that Santander Zero Credit Card charges 29.7% interest for cash withdrawals, which is payable even if you clear the card in full, whereas Nationwide's Flex Debit Card has no such charge - see http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/travel/cheap-travel-money#topcards
