Why won't Nationwide have me??

Nationwide are unpredictable. Have you tried for the cashcard instead? At present that is even better for withdrawing cash abroad if you travel outside Europe. Another possibility to increase your chances would to apply for a savings account which also needs a flexaccount to operate like the e-saver plus.0

From what I've heard, they are restricting applications for the "cashcard". They want customers who'll use the account as a primary bank account, rather than just a cheap cash option when abroad.
They have also (as I found out last week) stopped doing over the counter withdrawls using the cashcard, that are for less than £30.01.
The E-Saver plus (as you say) is the way around this, for the minute, anyway.....
To the OP: I've been with the Nationwide for 12 years and had the cashcard, but not managed to obtain a full account, even though I now have a full account, with 3 -n 1 card and overdraft through the Nat West.Capital one £200 - bal nil. Aqua £350 - bal nil
Vanquis limit [STRIKE]£250[/STRIKE] [STRIKE]£750[/STRIKE] £1250 - bal £450. Nat West overdraft limit - £300, unused. JD Willaims limit [STRIKE]£400 [/STRIKE] [STRIKE] £600 [/STRIKE] £900 - bal £90.
Very limit £400 - balance £329 (buy now pay 2011!)0 -

I don't think that you can open an e-saver account without first having a Flexaccount.
The only way's to open a new Flexaccount I believe are to agree to use it as your main account, or have a savings account with £2000 + in it.0 -
I feel your pain.
I opened a nationwide e-saving account and put a chunk of money in it. I then applied for a current account to get a debit card. I was given a current account but was issued with a cashcard which for me personally is useless.
I have tried twice now to get a debit card with the account and have been refused on both occasions. As the interrest rate on the savings account is low now im shutting the account.
Not really impressed with them at all. Getting through on the phone is an experience too.0 -
They are funny so and so's they took my mate with 20-25k about to default debt and gave him 600 o/d and visa debit cheque card but when I default on a few k with natwest they gave me a cash card acc which is reported on my credit as well run even though I never paid a penny into it.0

Why do you care? The service is atrocious and the products are all poor these days.0

Nationwide are now charging for cash withdrawals abroad in certain countries. See here for more details: http://nationwide.co.uk/current_account/foreigntransactions.htm They used to allow cash withdrawals without a fee in all countries, now they dont't. The conversion fee is 1.00% for countries that don't allow free cash withdrawals. Most banks have the normal 2.50% fee.
I would order enough foreign money before leaving the UK for the holiday. I think it's cheaper that way.0 -
Many banks have a currency exchange loading (up to 2.75-2.99% in some cases) plus a cash withdrawal fee - http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/travel/cheap-travel-money#hellMost banks have the normal 2.50% fee...0
