  • Hi, I have just put the phone down from the 'Anti Marketing Group' they gave me the same telephone number as the original post, an address in Norwich and a Goverment reg no., they told me it was a one off payment and only took my card and expiry no. stating they would take any details which gave them access to my account, that the bank would check them out!, I have just gone onto the link listed to find that that site stated the same number as the one I was given, and wasn't free to register, maybe I have misunderstood this link I thought is was the link to a free site :o

I think you must have but, as you've now given them your card details, they can take whatever they like from you for doing whatever they want to do (or not do).

Even if you cancel the card. https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/256

    The free site is http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/ctps/number_type.html
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

I just *love* cold callers :-) They are my absolute best friends. I always try and keep them on the line as long as I possibly can giving bogus details and arranging spoof appointments :-)

When I can't pick up the phone I let 'The General' do it . The General is basically a simple Linux based PC with a set of recordings of some old guy waffling on incoherently . As an added bonus if the caller stays on the line long enough 'The General' randomly takes a leak and the caller gets to hear every dribble :-) The really persistent callers who stay on the line are treated to some Sex Pistols :-) Some examples: http://www.elblowfly.org.uk/drwe/ {warning, sense of humour seriously required}.

It's made from nothing more than an old P4, all the software is free. To interface it to a bog standard BT line requires a PCI card (£20-£90 depending on just how you want to do it). It will interface with most of the ISTP's (Sipgate etc) without any additional hardware if you want to build one and try it without buying the additional parts. It's a blast and puts an old, low spec computer to a useful and fun role :-)

We've just had a call from them,(phoning with the number withheld) telling us our name and address and that it was available to anyone, telling us we'd been phoned a lot recently, they could stop it for us if we signed up for a one off fee, that they were government funded, wanted card details.

What is suspicious is that we had been bombarded by survey companies, as soon as one of my family members said "stop calling, how did you get our number, we are ex-directory" they hung up and a few days later this company calls. Strange how he knew that we'd had a lot of calls.

Cold calling to stop cold calling???
  • They are still at it.

I have just had a very pleasant sounding young man call me - purporting to be from the anti-marketing group (but number withheld). He said that there would be no fee - just a one-off administrative charge.

Since my number is ex-directory and I have already signed up for TPS and MPS, I smelt a rat, and found this thread while he was still on the line.

As soon as I suggested that this was a scam, he rang off.

At least it makes a change from the many calls from the 'Sky' scammers telling me that my insurance needs to be renewed.

    NOVEMBER 21, 2008

The way SPS, which traded as "Satellite Services", behaved was typical. It made unsolicited calls for its £60-a-year so-called service, even if you were on the Telephone Preference Service which is meant to block unwanted sales calls.
    ......
For the record, the directors of SPS were 25-year-old Kevin Francis Bowyer, Joe Darren Lloyd, 22, and Daniel Philip Pye, 25. All from Norwich.

  • These people are still active, they just phoned me. I think there might be some merit in the idea that they are getting their prospects from the Sky maintenance scam - I'd only recently told them to F-off & never call again after the 10th or so call in a year. And even if not, I'm with the TPS, so by cold calling me they're breaking the law they claim they're trying to uphold. Whatever the truth is behind these people, that irony should be enough to put anyone off. At best, they are just asking for money to register you with TPS, a free service, as I for one do not believe their website claim that they "have arrangements in place with major players in the UK Marketing Industry, in order to ensure that our subscribers are constantly protected against Sales calls and Junk Mail". Sure you do. Anyway, that's my 1st post, hope it helps someone.

Try not to trust any company with the name:

    Direct
    Consumer
    World
    Global

So I should cancel my direct debit to Global Direct World Consumer Corp?
  • had a job interview for this company, and within an hour got offered a job.

given a basic (and grammatically incorrect) script and slung straight onto the phones....

complete scam. wish i had stayed longer to find out what it is they actually do to stop "99.9%" of cold callers and junk mail.....

the 0800 number appears to go through to the supervisors office who is very rude to callers and just barks at them to write in to stop the direct debit...
